[HCDX] LA MW obesevrations for T-January 16, 2003 and some brief observations on domestic DX condx for this week-end

Hello to all of you !

The last January 16 was by far the best Latin American opening of the week, but still WAY below average, the past week produced two or three good openings, including a nearly positive identification from Nicaragua-600 (620 would be easier since I have a semi-local near the QC/VT border wich is WVMT in Burlington) and 600 is locally free since at least the summer of 2000 when CINW closed the CIQC simulcast and is ruled by doemstics WICC in Bridgeport, CT and CKAT in North Bay, ON at night as well as by Latin Americans (Cuba is the only one I noted this week here, though and generally with a very, very poor signal - and not even this Tuesday).

I didn't bother to include the time frames and much of the receptiond details, aside for some notes on the signal strenght mostly. I cannot send a full report when most if not all signals are weak to poor and into the mush 80% of the time, like they were this week. Domestic DX was not great either, though I did note a spanish tropical music domestic the last night on 1570 with an often local - like signal with just minor to moderate het from adjacent NYC powerhouse, as well as unID SS salsa domestic on 1330, poor to somewhat fair signals out of WBT-NC on 1100 and today as we were in Quebec City to pick up my mother from work (he had a class with adult students who study physiotherapy this week-end) at 2:18 PM we were hearing very poor to excellent signals from CKEC-1320, but no other signals present and when we come near Montreal they were lost to CJMR and others, so Quebec City most be in a pretty short-skip range from New Glasgow.

Well, that's it. Into the LAm reception notes right now:

Bogdan Chiochiu, DXing from Montreal/Pierrefonds, QC
Equipment: Sanyo MCD-S830 and ferrite bar antenna

530 Turks and Caicos, Radio Visión Cristiana, Caicos - very poor and fadey
610 huge growl against WIP / others; possibly from a computer
640 Venezuela  YVQO Union Radio - briefly fair to poor with WNNZ and later some Guadeloupe and possible Cuba - at 0257 UTC with woman in spanish with nx mentioning "Unión Radio".
640 Guadeloupe
640 Cuba ? - Salsa mx fairly good under WNNZ and Guadeloupe
750 Venezuela - sign-off tune under WSB (at 0356)
910 (tent.) Venezuela   YVRQ, Caracas - 0306-0307 UTC - breifly in spanish for maybe 4 seconds then faded down to clutter !

Well, that's for all the LAm signals I heard on the day before the last Friday, when even the big RCN out-let on 760 wasn't there at all and yesturday night around 11:30 PM the only signals comed were from RVC-530, Cuba-600 and Guadeloupe-640 and they were at very weak to fair levels only !

Tonight, my neighbors have their computer on and there is incredibly lots of noises from power-lines too, so I can forget about DX tonight, especially considering I have to go to bed around 10:15 PM as to be able to wake up around 6:15 AM or so for the school. What is odd is that before leaving for Quebec City, the noises was also very high in the SW band, even way up in the 13 meters band making impossible to listen to smaller international broadcasters on my Sangean 606a.

Hope this noise problem will not last too long.

73, good DX and good Week !
Bogdan Alexandru Chiochiu
