[HCDX] RE: Hard-Core-DX Digest, Vol 9, Issue 6
Gary Crites: don't know the answer to your high angle/low angle question,
but I can tell you that:
(1) generally, radio waves propagate better over water to a very few miles
inland. In the mid 1980s, a West Coast Florida station, WHBO-1040 from
Pinellas Park, used Gulf Coast "water wave" propagation to get daytime
coverage alonmg ther Gulf from Panama City beach to Key West. But it
couldn't be heard very far inland.
(2) While visiting Eureka over Thanksgiving weekend in 1995, I was able to
log and verify JOAB-693, JOIK-567, and Turks and Caicos-531 on the same
night (Nov 25) with a Sony ICF2010 from the Best Western Thunderbird Inn.
T&C was in around 0800 GMT, the Japanese around 1330-1400 GMT (one even gave
an English ID). I'm not too surprised at the Japanese reception, but was
surprised at hearing T&C-531 over an all-land path.

Regarding the bandwidth used for Thomas' propagation outlooks, it generally
uses about < of the daily digest, whereas unedited 'original messages' in
the replies, often use = of the space. *Please* let us all try to remove
everything unnecessary when 'replying' to a message. Thomas - please observe
this practice yourself, it would shorten your postings considerably 8-)
I am unable to do any LF/MF DXing from here, but I have been enjoying the
Outlooks, so I would be happy with slightly less detail. I probably wouldn't
follow any links to the full Outlook, which would be a pity because I would
miss the 'Lesson' which Thomas often includes. If all the Lessons are to be
found on the home page link, then they do not need to appear in the postings
quite so often, but I feel that any updates and additions should.
BTW, thanks for the new 'lightning' links.

When I first started in shortwave (1997) there were few to talk to about
radio in this area of the world. Shortwave in America on the west coast is
about as popular as Ice Hockey...No Ice! Half the entertainment out here is
watching someones reaction to seeing your longwire antenna strung out on the
ground for the first time. They look at you like maybe you're the man from
mars or maybe a terrorist!
Here's my questions:
I've read two conflicting theories about dx reception. One article stated
that vertical antennas are better because they are better suited the the LOW
ANGLE to the horizon Dx signals tend to have. Then I read another article
about someone who just strung his wire on the ground (verticle pattern)
because rare dx signals are mostly HIGH ANGLE signals. Who's correct?
Here's another one: I seem to have better reception dxing west out over the
Pacific in the morning than east in the evening over land. Do radio waves
propagate better over water than land?
When in doubt...

The first guy. Real rare radio signal are often very long distance, and
thus they normally come in with a low angle over the horizon. Thus it is
best to have antennas that have a low azimuth, as verticals.
However, a very long wire, even on the ground, gets a low azimuth reception
pattern. Ground it in one end, and you have a Beverage antenna. So you
might say both were right, except on the angle question. Low angle is the
correct answer.

Normally, yes. Other guys would have to explain the reasons why, though.
