Japan's lower house approves NHK's draft budget :
(18 March 05)
The House of Representatives in Japan yesterday approved the fiscal 2005
draft budget of public broadcaster NHK. The draft budget features a fall in
revenues from viewer subscription fees, reports Japan Today. The US$6.43
billion (672.4 billion yen) budget, financed almost entirely through
subscription fees, was approved only with the support of the ruling
coalition. This is the first time since 1997 that the NHK budget has failed
to gain unanimous approval in the lower house. The fiscal 2005 budget is
down from the previous year for the first time because of a fall in viewer
subscription fees, owing to a refusal by many households to settle their
dues after fraud cases involving NHK employees came to light. (ABU Latest News)
