BBC Radio commands 54 per cent listenership:
UK-based radio broadcaster, BBC Radio, has a 54 per cent share of all radio listenership in the country, according to figures released by Radio Joint Audience Research (Rajar).
Rajar, an organisation that monitors and reports the radio listening habits of the UK population, said that several of BBC's digital stations continued to attract new listeners.
BBC 6 Music added 10,000 listeners to take its audience to 238,000 - a rise of 53.5 per cent over the last 12 months.
The BBC Asian Network also saw its audience breach the half-million mark, up 62,000 to 535,000.
China launches satellite TV service:
Television viewers in Asia are now able to enjoy Chinese programs through a satellite television service recently launched by China, the Xinhua News Agency has reported.
"The launch aims to meet the growing demand of Chinese language programs from the English-speaking audience in the Asian region," said Li Jian, president of the China International TV Corp.
The "Great Wall TV Package" featuring 11 channels including CCTV-4, CCTV-9, CCTV-Chinese Opera, Beijing TV, Shanghai TV -- in English, Mandarin, and the Cantonese and Min dialects -- are now available in Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
The service was launched in North America in October last year and received positive response from subscribers.
"We are looking to launch our Great Wall satellite service in Europe, Africa and Oceania in the future, " Mr Li said.
RadioAsia 2005 set to promote radio industry:
Radio industry experts and professionals from all over the region are expected to congregate at the first RadioAsia Conference 2005 to be held in conjunction with BroadcastAsia 2005, in Singapore from June 15-17, 2005.
Jointly organised by the ABU, AMIC and Singapore Exhibition Services Pte. Ltd., the event is the first of a series of annual conferences on radio in Asia.
This unprecedented conference will focus on the impacts of emerging and converging radio communications strategies in the Asia-Pacific mediascape. Speakers and attendees will be drawn from across Asia, as well as US/European radio agencies and professionals active in the region.
In addition to attending the conference sessions, delegates will gain access to networking sessions, specifically focusing on areas like research, technology, methods, education and alliances.
Among the topics on radio to be dealt with at the conference include Public Service Radio, audience research, evolving radio content formats, radio regulation, community radio, radio advertising and journalism, digital radio as well as cross-media strategies.
David Astley, Secretary-General of the ABU says, "We are confident that this new conference will be the catalyst for radio and will help to spawn exciting developments in radio in this part of the world; we are very pleased to be working with AMIC and SES and be part of this."
