TVNZ welcomes broadcasting plans:
Television New Zealand (TVNZ) has welcomed the announcement of a
multi-million dollar broadcasting "programme of action" by New Zealand
Broadcasting Minister Steve Maharey.
Mr Maharey yesterday released the policy development plan to "build a
strong and sustainable public broadcasting environment".
The document contains several policy decisions, outlining the government's
concerns and some options for action.
The cost of the policy being considered was estimated to be in the order of
$10 million in 2005/2006 rising to $50 million by 2009/2010.
The Chief Executive of TVNZ Ian Fraser said: "The plan released today
recognises the value of public broadcasting and supports the special place
of the public broadcasters. It also recognises that the "public value" of
TVNZ is, at least, as important as its commercial value."
The planning document also provides a mechanism for developing a level of
direct funding to TVNZ to enable it to be a more complete public
broadcaster, giving fuller effect to the TVNZ Charter.
Mr Fraser said a more secure level of direct funding would let TVNZ plan
its future developments with greater confidence.

PNG, Australia sign media development deal:
Papua New Guinea and Australia have signed a five-year media development
program agreement to support the role of PNG's media, ABC News has reported.
The initiative will be funded under the Australia-PNG aid programme.
The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) spokesman,
John Davidson says it will build the capacity of the media sector by
looking at access, content and the training and development of media personnel.
He says another benefit is boosting PNG's national broadcaster - National
Broadcasting Commission of Papua New Guinea (NBC) - through a partnership
with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
"This partnership will involve organisational development and digitising
the NBC archive to reserve PNG's important cultural heritage.
"The aim is to increase the NBC's capacity to fulfil its role as Papua New
Guinea's key provider of quality information to all people, acting as a
national voice for their views and aspirations," he added.

ABC-Australia to launch new channel:
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) will launch a new free-to-air
digital TV channel - ABC2 - on 7 March.
ABC2 will broadcast a wide range of new and repeat programs including
children's and regional shows, documentaries as well as international and
regional news coverage.
The new channel will be using content created for both broadband and
television output.
Director of ABC New Media and Digital Services Lynley Marshall says the
launch of ABC2 is an important move for the ABC, helping to ensure the
national broadcaster has a presence in the digital media landscape.
"ABC2 is very much a complementary service to the ABC main channel. The
channel has been developed on a sustainable production and funding model
and will continue to deliver high-quality ABC programming to Australian
audiences for years to come," Ms Marshall said.

Taiwan launches mobile TV on public transportations:
Taiwan has launched Dimo TV, a digital mobile television service, on 165
buses and six harbour ships in Kaohsiung City.
The project, worth around US$1.8 million, is a collaboration between Taiwan
Public Television Service (PTS) and Taiwan's National Project of the
Digital Television Development.
Buses with Dimo TV are equipped with a Digital Video
Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T) receiver and a 19-inch LCD screen each.
Designed as a non-commercial and advertising-free channel, Dimo TV has a
program line-up which includes news, weather and traffic reports, travel
stories, infotainment and edutainment - all offered by PTS.
Kaohsiung is the third Asian city to launch this service, after Singapore
and Shanghai.
