SLRC-Sri Lanka commends staff on tsunami response:
(14 February 05)
The Chairman of Sri Lanka's national broadcaster, the Sri Lanka Rupavahini
Corporation (SLRC), has commended his staff on the way they responded to
the tsunami disaster. In an interview with the Sunday Observer marking
SLRC's 23rd anniversary, M M Zuhair described their response as excellent,
not only in informing the public but in mobilising the people to come to
the assistance of the victims.
SLRC organised a major relief operation after on-air appeals brought in big
donations. It sent more than 200 lorry loads of food, clothing and medicine
to badly hit areas in the island's north, east and south. The tsunami
killed more than 30,000 people in Sri Lanka. Mr Zuhair also said SLRC
planned to enhance both its technical infrastructure and the content of its
programs. "Money is not our sole objective. We are concerned about
producing quality programs that can match international standards while
preserving our cultural values and traditions." Through various new
programs, SLRC was also engaged in promoting the knowledge of English among
the young, he said. SLRC was established in 1982 with assistance from the
Japanese government. It is a member of both the ABU and Asiavision, the
ABU's daily television news exchange.
RTB-Brunei holds tsunami charity concert:
(14 February 05)
More than 60 local artistes took part in a charity concert staged by Radio
Television Brunei on Saturday night to raise funds for survivors of the
tsunami. All proceeds from the three-hour show, held near the capital
Bandar Seri Begawan, will be channeled to countries affected by the
disaster, the Borneo Bulletin reported. Radio Brunei's Pelangi youth
network organised the concert. Afterwards, RTB's Assistant Head of Radio
Programs, Haji Bahmin Haji Hamdan, presented a cheque for the proceeds to a
Brunei official. Last week, RTB launched a charity CD to raise money for
victims of the tsunami. Called Asia Aid Hari Baru, it features four songs
specially composed by local songwriters. It sells for 7.00 Brunei dollars
(just over US$4.00). Music videos of two of the tracks will be released soon.
Mobile TV services a step closer in Korea:
(14 February 05)
South Korea's major television stations will join cable operators and radio
broadcasters today to compete for mobile television service licences, The
Korea Herald has reported. The services are due to start in June. The
Korean Broadcasting Commission will accept licence applications today, and
the government plans to allocate the licences next month. The services will
allow people to watch digital television programs on their mobile devices.
Three of the six licences will be split among South Korea's four
terrestrial television stations - KBS, MBC, SBS and EBS. The remaining
three spots will go to consortiums of cable operators, radio broadcasters
and equipment makers. At least six consortiums have announced that they
plan to apply for licences. The three television stations that obtain
licences will be required to share their transmission infrastructure with
the other operators of the mobile broadcast services, allowing the smaller
companies to reduce costs and expand coverage.
