Differences
between MFJ-1025 and 1026
By Al Merriman
on hcdx list September 6, 1997
The 1025 is the standard version of the 1026.
The 1025 does not have the built in active whip antenna, nor does
it have a amplifier on the Aux Antenna input.
Since I just completed a conversion of one of these units, here
are some comments.
Please
note
The
1025's being made now use the same board with surface mount
parts that is used in the 1026. They are also in a larger
cabinet. When the 1025 first came out it was housed in a
smaller cabinet and used a different board which used regular
parts - not surface mount.

New way to do it
Iit is still quite easy to unsolder the ground side of the
four inductors and lift that side only, removing them from
the circuit and making reversibility quite easy. I crushed
the two resistors with long nose pliers, but leaded resistors
could be added to complete the reversal of the mod.

The conversion
is just as easy. Timed myself on this one and it took 45 minutes
for everything.
The parts that you change/delete have the same part numbers as the
1026.
1. The 1025 has parts with leads as opposed to the surface
mount components found in the 1026.
Except for the two caps - C8/C16 you do not have to remove these
components completely from the unit - just lift one end. This would
make it much easier in the future to return the unit to its original
configuration.
If you prefere, the parts can be completely removed.
2. This unit is smaller in size. This would make it a better
choice for someone who travels and takes radio equipment with them.
There are still several places on the front panel where a small
DPDT toggle switch can be mounted to swap antenna inputs.
3. Costs less.
4. Performance. With limited use so far it seems to perform
just as well as big brother. Nulls are easily attained across the
entire Medium Wave Band.
For most DXers this would probably be the unit of choice.
It is doubtful if most people would ever use the built in active
antenna in the 1026 unless they do a lot of DXing from temporary
locations.
Whichever way you decide to go, with a few easy mods these units
are a winner for the Medium Wave DXer! |
