Here is a piece that appeared in Melbourne's Herald-Sun newspaper
today 21/1/97.. Editor: Paul Dowsley.

Staff from ABC Radio's international division, Radio Australia, will
stop work today to protest at threats to the service's future.

They believe the service could fall foul of the Howard
Government-commissioned review of the viability of all ABC sections.

Former Fairfax and Optus chief executive Bob Mansfield is due to
deliver his findings on Friday.

Speculation has grown that his report will recommend the closeure or
sale of Radio Australia.

Staff who are members of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance
and the Community and Public Sector Union will stop work for about 45
minutes today.

They will consider a motion calling on ABC managment to defend the
value of Radio Australia and its future.

Radio Australia started in Melbourne in 1939 as Australia Calling and
now employs 140 staff, still mainly in Melbourne. It broadcasts
predominaantly Australian information on shortwave frequencies to Asia
& the Pacific.
