Hi folks,
now here is the report I promised about three weeks ago.
If you think, that taking a receiver on a long-distance trip to explore the
airwaves from a location some thousand miles from one_s home country has
nothing to do with DXing at all, you should stop reading immediately. ;-))
I for myself enjoyed a lot discovering the different listening situation on
the lower bands, but also to listen to programs and music I can hardly get
out of the noise when being at home.
The receiving location was Treasure Beach on the south coast of Jamaica.
The rx was a Sony ICF 2001 D with a little magnetic loop antenna (homemade
by DL6NCV).
While the AM spectrum was observed intensively during previous stays on the
island in 1990, 1992 and 1993, I concentrated on the tropical bands this
time. I only checked the following AM-channels daily, as they promised new
countries for me:
970, 1000, 1090, 1290, 1340: Am Virgin Isl.
780: Br. Virgin Isl.
640, 1420: Guadeloupe
610, 730: Trinidad and Tobago
Those frequencies was observed just before local sunset, because of the
strong interference from Colombian and Venezuelan stations during
nighttime. As I knew from former visits, some eastern islands like St.
Kitts, St. Lucia and St. Vincent are audible for only 20-40 minutes daily,
during the above mentioned period. Unfortunately, only 610 kHz brought a
new country this time. ICN Radio was heard at 2317 UTC (1817 LT) with SINFO
32422 until 2354, when RCN Bogota took over. That was no armchair
listening, especially during rain, when there came up a lot of electric
noise on the whole AM band and the tropical bands also. It did not help
that both the rx and the antenna were run by batteries.
Daytime reception on the tropical bands (a strange thing for a European
listener!) was possible for stations from Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras,
Colombia, French Guiana and Venezuela. I was quite surprised to log Mali,
Gabon and Togo around 2215 UTC - this was 1715 local time, more than one
hour before sunset. On the other hand, there were only 6 stations audible
between 6 and 7 MHz during local daytime - quite a difference to the
overcrowded 49 mB in Europe!

All frequencies were checked several times for identification. The times
given above were taken from the first check, so the SINFO ratings can be
compared better between different stations.

for northern and eastern locations on the island, please let me know. The
