  GLENN HAUSER'S SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-23, Nov 26, 1997

WORLD OF RADIO FREQUENCY CHANGE. From December thru February,
WWCR-1 plans to open 9475 an hour earlier at 2100, so our first 
broadcast Thu at 2130 should be much better heard in NAm and 
Europe on 9475 than it has been on 15685 (Hauser)

WORLD OF RADIO 919 includes: advice from WRN on getting WOR from 
Sound Store; VOA avoids 13mb; WLC Rogers City MI closing; MW 
harmonic DXing; more stations cleared to move into expanded AM 
band; FCC busts more pirates; BBC news online; Mideast and 
African clandestines; Taiwan may transmit RFA; Super Snooper sold 
out; DX-398 scarce; and many of the stories below (Hauser)

CENTRAL AMERICA. On his WWCR program UT Tue Nov 25 at 0100 on
5070, Jeff Baker revealed that he plans to set up three SW
transmitters somewhere in Central America, since the Feds are
going to prohibit all far-right broadcasting from the USA! 
Mentioned $100,000 having been raised, and a total power of
"4 million watts" presumably exaggerated ERP (James Latham, RFPI) 
I then checked his wacky, slow-loading and misspelled website--
spelling "do" wrong takes some doing especially when you call 
yourself a Dr.--and tho supposedly updated Nov 24, did not find 
anything about this on it:

COSTA RICA. It always happens. After I mentioned last week that
TIAWR Wavescan had been missing, it was back Sun Nov 23 at 1104,
best on 6150, 2303 on 9725, but four weeks old, featuring Radio 
St. Helena Day "today, today". It seems the Americans are poor 
cousins to the Europeans, who presumably get it on time
via Slovakia (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL
BROADCASTING Nov 24)

KOREA NORTH. The English portions of Ashimori's monitored sked
for R. Pyongyang, with the addition of feeders 3560 and/or 4405,
but lacking target areas, exactly match the frequencies in the 
printed sked I gave here last week. Since then I have checked 
several times for the new 1800 and 2100 to NAm, but never hear 
any signal on 11700, and 13760 is blocked by WHRI, without even 
a het as was once the case (Glenn Hauser, OK)

NICARAGUA. R. Miskut, 5770-USB, Nov 26 at 1205 with hyper Spanish
news, badly distorting on peaks, versus heavy continuous RTTY. No
LSB, and a reduced carrier in there may have been from Miskut; 1215
TC for 6:17, mentioned Zelaya; ID presumed. 1227 losing out to the 
high-speed RTTY (Glenn Hauser, OK)

PORTUGAL. Last week I neglected to give the time for RDP spurs on 
17908, 17583--around 1530 UT. I see in BBC Monitoring that the 
source of these, 17745, is on the air Sat and Sun only, at 1300-
2100. Nov 23-24 it was not so strong, and the spurs were not

ROMANIA. RRI's best-heard English broadcast, now at 1300 on 17745, 
doesn't fade in here until sometime during the hour, but is 
usually good by the end at 1356. Noted on Fri Nov 21 with
Letterbox at 1340. However, on Sat and Sun this is blocked by
Portugal (q.v.). One of RRI's other frequencies, 15250, has
been missing, until noted on with a very poor signal Nov 25,
Meanwhile, the new broadcast at 0600 has deleted 6155 upon
complaints from Austria and its morning listeners in Europe,
say Wolfgang Bueschel and Kai Ludwig; I wonder if the sending
still exist on the other listed frequency, 5965 (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WORLD OF RADIO 919)

THAILAND. R. Thailand has changed both frequencies to NAm as of
Nov 21: 0030-0200 13695 ex-11905; 0300-0430 15460 ex-11890
(Warren561, WORLD OF RADIO 919) First half hour of each in
English; not much here on 15460, but some days 13695 is loud tho 
fluttery, other days barely audible; wide variation due to high 
latitude path which could be avoided by using Delano and
Greenville (Hauser, OK)

U S A. More than two years ago, Allan Weiner filed an application 
with the FCC for a new legal shortwave station in Monticello, 
Maine. The FCC did nothing until now, when it has finally 
accepted the application for filing, probably because Weiner has 
signed up George Jacobs & Associates to represent him. Some 
factions at the FCC opposed this, remembering Weiner's long 
record of pirate radio, flouting FCC rules and regulations; but 
the powers that be decided he had "done his time" in limbo. This 
is, of course, only the first of several steps in putting a new 
station on the air. The application originally planned to aim at 
Europe, 65 degrees, but this has been reversed to 245 degrees 
toward "Mexico", heh heh. Location is in the extreme northeast of 
the USA whence skip-zone will be minimized, at these coordinates: 
46-20-30 N, 67-49-40 W. File number is BPIP-950306-VA, info from

U S A. WLC, 75-year-old maritime communications station for the 
Great Lakes, is closing down its voice services after Nov 28 at
1930-2030, since shipping company clients refused to pay a modest
monthly fee. Check SSB shore frequencies 2514 and 4369, paired 
with ship channels 2118 and 4077. QSL address: Central Radio
