Year 3 - Number 49 - Rome, 21 January 1998

2330- 4925- INDONESIA- RRI Jambi heard again on Sat10 and Mon 13 with
fair signal under a local strong QRM Warszaw Radio ( CW marker) Same
times for both logs (till 2330 with music and quran praises) then news
---LIANGAS, Thessalloniki, Greece

2332- 15820- ARGENTINA- De Colección / R. Rivadavia on USB 2332 On Dec.
28, talk in Spanish till 2335, when man in accented English announced,
"This program, 'De Colección', that is broadcast through 1270, LS11, R.
Provincia de Buenos Aires, Republic of Argentina, will send QSL cards to
all those radio listeners [word missed] that are so kind as to send us
proof of their reception of our signals. Write to 'De Colección', Post
Office Box Number 96, Central Post Office Postcode 1900, La Plata,
Argentina." (ID text filled in or confirmed by Jerry Berg, who logged
this program on 8908U in Sept.) Then back to Spanish. Next evening at
this time, was carrying R. Rivadavia with a sports talk program called
"Deportivas del aire"; at 0003 (Dec. 30 UTC), announced "Cubriendo todo
el pais, transmite LR5, Radio Rivadavia, en 630 kiloHertz, Buenos Aires,
Republica Argentina." Per Gabriel Ivan Barrera, this program is beamed
to Antarctica on Sundays. Haven't seen 15820U reported, though. ---HILL,
Littleton, MA, USA

2332- 7107.6- TAIWAN- CBS 2332 Up from nominal 7105 as noted Jan. 1
with man/woman dialog in Chinese; incredibly choppy, making it virtually
impossible to read. Fairly strong at first but faded rapidly, then got
clobbered by V. Of Russia (7105) s/on just before 2400. Also heard at
1200 on Jan. 3 with possible pips (though they might have been coming
from an adjacent station) and unredable ID by woman in Chinese; just as
choppy as during evening reception. At first I thought this might be Nei
Menggu PBS, but Tony Jones heard a CBS ID and also noted them // 9610
and 11725. ---HILL, Littleton, MA, USA

GLEANINGS
-----------------------

FRANCE - The erstwhile coastal station St.-Lys Radio is closing
permamently Fri Jan 16 at 1900 UT, I am advised by the Union des
Ecouteurs Francais. Primary voice shore-to-ship channels are 4366, 8896
(or 8806?), 13152. Also, the TV program "Thalassa" dedicated to the sea
will mention the closing, following a visit to the station by a
journalist Jan 13, on Jan 16 at 2055-2200 [local time UT+1?] via the
France 3 network. Perhaps the UEF would E-mail you their complete notice
(in French) on request: tsfinfo@xxxxxxxx (Glenn Hauser, and WORLD OF
RADIO 924 / GH SW/DX Report Jan. 15)

HONDURAS - [non]. Hans Johnson, Cumbre DX, heard Jeff Baker say on WWCR
Jan 3 that his new SW transmitters would be here and that he was leaving
WWCR as of that date. However, he has not left WWCR, and Adam Lock knows
of no plans to; heard UT Jan 13 at 0050 on 5070 selling flights to San
Pedro Sula. His WWCR show is UT Tue/Thu/Sat 0000 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WORLD OF RADIO 924 / GH SW/DX Report Jan. 15)

IRELAND - [non]. West Coast Radio Ireland may have to close at the end
of January. It is urgently calling for letters of support to Ms. Sile de
Valera, Minister for Communications, Dublin, but have not given her
E-mail address, which is: < minister@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx > (Finbarr
O'Driscoll, WORLD OF RADIO 924 / GH SW/DX Report Jan. 15)

LITHUANIA - [non]. In January I am no longer hearing R. Vilnius on 5880
at 0030 in English, just 5905 via Germany. So it seems they have decided
to stick with the old frequency despite the heavy fax QRM! If 5880 was
not suitable due to BBC on 5875, they should have kept looking (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 924 / GH SW/DX Report Jan. 15)

MEXICO/COLOMBIA - Someone changed the frequency of the XESHT third
harmonic I reported from 4290 to 4290.3, but it is actually on 4290.0.
It should not be confused with the Colombian harmonic on 4290.3 Henrik
Klemetz identified as Sincelejo, and which is on the air at least an
hour earlier in the morning from 1100, and which is also the likely
source of the unID harmonic on 5720.4 some have reported. BTW, I am
still hearing the Mexican, best yet on Jan 15 around 1245 with no
problem from the utes; whilst in Laredo, TX, Jan 7 around 1730, I was
able to detect the 4290 carrier on the YB-400 with nothing but whip
antenna in the parking lot of TAMU (Glenn Hauser, OK / GH SW/DX Report
Jan. 15)

NEPAL - R. Nepal 3230 outlets was active on January 6 with good signal
in // with 5005. No heard after this day. (Walter Mola, Italy /
Gatflash! # 114)

NORWAY - Contrary to the previous report based on an inaccurate schedule
posting by Olav Mo Grimdalen which he subsequently corrected,
NRK/Denmark's 18950 remains on the 1000 broadcast to SAm, but has been
added at 1100 for Jan. Also, 13790 remains to NAm at 1300 including
English on Sundays (Glenn Hauser, OK / GH SW/DX Report Jan. 15)

PAKISTAN - Unusual reception in 90 mb of R. Pakistan on 3205 KHz on
January 6 from 1553 till 1741 s/off. Transmission consisted in musical
program (subcontinental music with some annoucements about songs ) Many
mentions of Pakistan, at 1730 some news in EE ( till 1735 )then in Urdu
and signal off at 1741 suddenly, less anthem. Heard only this day.
Walter Mola / Gatflash! # 114)

PERU - 4571 v R Uno "la diferente" is the new name and slogan for R
Gotas de Oro; the change seems to have taken place early Nov last year.
Nonetheless, reports of "Frecuencia 14-30" and "R Gotas de Oro" keep
showing up as if nothing happened. -- On Jan 2, I heard speaker Iván
attempting to explain the philosophy behind the new name in an ID tag,
"Porque somos la primera, somos R Uno, la diferente", it's because we
are the Number One that we are Radio One, the one that makes the
difference. [Got that?] The address, MW fqy and phone number are the
same as those listed for Gotas de Oro. H Klemetz / Dateline Bogota,
January 12, 1998)

TAIWAN - On the 1st of January, Radio Taipei International announced
that it was part of the Central Broadcasting System, ROC. I finally
found the CBS Web site on the 13th; I was visitor number 8. The URL is <
http://www.cbs.org.tw/ >. There are English language pages as well, but
most of these are under construction. I can't find any specific mention
of RTI, but then I don't have the proper fonts nor can I read Chinese...
:-) (Sundstrom, NJ USA Jan 15)

U S A - WGTG owner David Frantz is elated to have received an official
letter from FCC exonerating it from any wrongdoing, harmful interference
as charged by unfriendly neighbors. He feels this has been an extreme
case of small-town mentality doing everything possible to ruin a new
business by an "outsider". Airtime is now being reserved on second
transmitter; but Frantz is considering building another station at same
location which would have different calls and a secular format; or
selling the present two-transmitter, five-antenna facility for 300,000
USD (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO 924 / GH SW/DX Report Jan. 15)

U S A - Allan Weiner's SW station in Maine, which has been granted a
construction permit, may not be on the air before early 1999. Probably
as a result of the Fury fiasco, Brother Stair has been offered as much
time as he wants. If any is left, the station may be called "The Planet"
and sell time to other clients, and provide DX programs (George Thurman,
TX, WORLD OF RADIO 924 / GH SW/DX Report Jan. 15)

VENEZUELA - R. Barquisimeto celebrates its 60th anniversary on Tue Jan
20, when it will probably come back to SW, 4990 and 9510 (Luis Guerra
Brandt, Club Diexistas de la Amistad ham net Jan 11 via Fernando
Viloria, and Jorge Garcia Rangel, Venezuela, via WORLD OF RADIO 924 / GH
SW/DX Report Jan. 15)
