Several DXers have reported that the Dallas-Fort Worth TIS has changed
call letters to WPLR660 from WQO767. The first report received here is
dated 9 February 1998.

Does anyone know of a TIS station on 1670 in the South? I am hearing an
UNID one with a female announcer giving a phone number "723" or "732"
prefix. She also mentions "Northeast Area" in the message. Somewhere I
read about a TIS in a small town in Texas. Does anyone know anything
about this. I've check Bill Harms TIS site, but nothing is listed. Any
help, would be appreciated.
There is a new TIS operating on 1670 khz in Midlothian, Texas. This
station is a operated by the Midlothian Fire Dept. Reports can be sent

I have been hearing it here very weakly
The station on 1670 Khz that I have been hearing with the "Southern
Accent" is operated by the Midlothian Fire Dept in Midlothian, Texas.
The station uses kids from the local school to broadcast the
information on the area. The station just runs 3 1/2 watts from a 35
foot antenna. I am gettings bits and pieces of it here.

t 1700-NY, JFK Airport. unid man talking u/WCMQ with parking info.
Hard to copy and WCMQ was fairly strong. Could catch bits and
pieces during WCMQ fades at 0550 EST 2/13. Soon lost. Caught "New
York" a couple of times and "International Airport". I am going to
try a taped tent. report to them. Hopefully they can make out the

KRIZ-1620 now on the air with R&B. Very strong here, abit stronger than
KDIA-1640, 10DB o S9 or better. Don't know if they are running 1KW or
10 KW. Drat there goes AL. Glad I hrd them when I did.

1620 KRIZ WA Renton noted on //1420 Feb. 13 at 2321 EST. Slight hum
on the signal. They seemed to be on 1kw as I could null
it to distortion. They always give dual KRIZ/KZIZ IDs
even though KZIZ isn't on at night (PT-WA)
I'm certainly glad I got Argentina and WPHG logged during the last two
weeks!

A new X-band station has made its appearance: KRIZ-1620-Renton, WA. I
first noted it 2/13 at 2252 EST with fast-paced adult instrumental
music and dual IDs for KRIZ-1420 and KZIZ-1560. (No ID for the 1620
yet.) Also in at 0800 EST 2/14 with soul/gospel music. This station
ID's frequently.

COMMENTS
Well another successful DX'pedition is completed. The weather did not
quite co-operate and the chance of snow turned into a steady snow with
a strong wind. The walk out to the magic DX bus where we DX from was
once again a challenge. Lots of snow on the ground and more falling.
Took two to handle a toboggan again. The good news was once at the bus
and we unloaded and got a fire going, we could go back out in the snow
and wind to walk back to get fire wood. Ahhh yes a double trip this go
around. But as you can see it was worth every step and drop of sweat.
Managed to get TA's and TP's this time. Conditions were not great and
the snow caused more static than we needed. TP Hets were very few and
all between 700 and 800 kHz. No TA Hets but 1314 was there in plain
view. Hey I log them I don't make up the rules.
The crazy time lady station was logged at long last. 1610 was very
dead. Our pest from MN was no where to be heard so we thought we were
in for a treat. Unfortunately nothing else came in to replace it.

Monitoring Trip to Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Laredo, TX
first week of January, 1998, dates and times UT u.o.s.

ON THE WAY DOWN
After one day in Oklahoma City catching up on movies, and another in
Fort Worth for art museums, I took US 377 which connects Fort Worth to
Del Rio through no bigger cities in west/ central Texas. Once out of
range of KERA 90.1 Dallas, there was essentially NO public radio to be
heard all the way to Laredo.
Jan 4 1730, KOMA-1520 skywave was mostly in, with occasional fades,
near Brownwood TX. No other high-band full-power station has such
coverage in mid-America; it does not last at this point thru the entire
noon hour, but is probably audible some 22 hours per day out to 300 or
400 miles at least. It's only a shame KOMA has so little news for the
benefit of Oklahomans 'abroad'.
Jan 4 1855, XERF-1570, at London, TX, Mexican music in and out with
skywave fading, 1900 ID as 250 kW with street address of studio; still
too far out for groundwave.
Jan 4 1905, first Mexican FM becomes audible on 91.1, music in and
out. This is the 100 kW at Monclova, Coah., about 300 mi away, near
Junction with I-10. I'll bet it's on a mountaintop, possibly closer to
the border. More below.
Jan 4 1920, KAHO-FM, 93.5 local in Junction TX, listed as CP in MSD
and not listed in FMA, is now on; but the FMA-listed translator on
102.3 was not heard.
Jan 4 2001, 91.1, ID as "La Grande de Coahuila, XHMZI, 100 mil watts
de potencia..." Reception now solid at Rock Springs.
Not until Carta Valley, 40 road miles out of Del Rio, did the Ciudad
Acun~a FMs become audible, obviously much lower power/tower than much
more distant 91.1. Reception on 95.5, 99.7, 100.7, 92.9 some of which
are intriguing unlisteds; plus Del Rio 94.3, 96.3 which did have
greater range to south of Junction. By 2100 more Mexicans were showing
up on 104.7, 106.3, 107.9.
Most of the Mexican FMs in this report were taped, and may be the
subject of a future World of Radio Extra.
AM BANDSCAN, from Del Rio, primary attention to Mexican FM, Mon Jan 5
1552-1727 UT from motel, 1842-1902 from car parked on NW outskirts of
Del Rio; lady in a pickup stopped to be sure I was OK--"yes, just
listening to the radio..."
660 XEFZ, Noti-Radio 6-60, Monterrey, ID at 1842
700 KSEV, Tomball-Houston, presumed, very weak, English call-in
1843, 15 kW
710 unID, very weak, no longer Mu'zquiz, probably KURV Edinburg
if not KGNC Amarillo
730 XEPQ, Mu'zquiz, Coahuila, ex-710 where still listed by IRCA
1996; and I used to DX at night from OK when it was slightly
off frequency, listed 100 watts. Now it's broken the clear-
channel status of XEX in Mexico City, at least in daytime.
1844, good signal with tel. 6-01-50 in Mu'zquiz, canned ID
with heavy echo, "Esta's escuchando la 7-30", hi temp
predicted 25.
820 WBAP audible but weak at 1852
870 WWL, New Orleans weak but clear in daytime over all-land
path tho skirting the coast at first, almost 700 miles and I
assume at this latitude purely surface wave. About the same
distance as between Chicago and Enid where I can get WMAQ.
1847 huge adstring including Orleans Bank; no co-channel but
slight adjacent from 860. Checked again in Laredo, closer
and more water path, but never heard it there, perhaps due
to higher local noise/QRM level
1010 XEKD local-strength at 1851, maybe off earlier, see 1340.

1080 KRLD audible but weak at 1852
1090 XEAE, Acuna supposed to have moved from 1600, was not on
1230 KDLK, Del Rio had news of construction beginning tomorrow
for two months on main N/S drag Avenue F, and for 4-5 months
on road to Laughlin AFB; Big Country Music, 1552
1340 XEDH seemed to be the only local Acun~a AM besides 1570 when
checking the band at 1708, but 1010 found later. Splatter
from 1230 and 1340 filled the band between their frequencies.
MAV gives but one group in the same plaza for Acun~a: XEAE-
1600, XEDH-1340, XEKD-1010, XHHAC-100.7 and XHRG-95.5.
1540 KKF737, TIS at Lake Amistad, audible from NW outskirts of
Del Rio, but not far SE on the highway losing out to
something else. Primary subject is lake level, mixed with
loops repeating less often. You'll recall that it's way
below normal, a cause for great concern. As of Tue Dec 30 it
was 32'3" below normal, down 1/4 inch from day before, at
1083.76. National Park Service reminds you that a lake use
permit is now mandatory for all motorboats on Lake Amistad.
"This is KKF737". Respect the power of Mother Nature...
Deer Hunting in Amistad NRA--archery only, Texas and NPS
licenses required. Also turkeys and javelina thru Jan 4.
Shotgun hunting for quail till Feb 22. Rifles and handguns
prohibited. 1998 annual lake permit stickers available last
13 months.
1570 XERF, didn't pay much attention to as a local; big signal but
not as huge as one might think for 250 kW, if really that in
daytime. Standard ID does not mention IMER, but gives local
street address. Runs ads, so I thought it might have been
re-privatized as wanted by previous owner. However, it still
carries Antena Radio, the 1300 UT newscast from IMER, //5985
and 9705 XERMX but a satellite-delay behind them, so perhaps
its current status is a compromise [Jan 28 at 0002 I caught
an ID including "La poderosa...una estacio'n del grupo IMER"]
1600 XEAE, Acun~a station was off, supposed to have moved to 1090
EAGLE PASS BANDSCAN (across from PIEDRAS NEGRAS) but starting outside
Del Rio. I parked in Eagle Pass for an hour of band- scanning, but did
not explore, as I needed to get to Laredo before sundown. No time to
check TV, such as listed XEPN-3.
580 XEMU was on, usual big signal into lots of Texas
620 Het of about 1/2 kHz noted day and night, but couldn't pull
an ID like Wilkins, Colorado did for XEGH, Rio Bravo, Tamps.
I guess the day on-freq station would have to be KAAM Plano?
920 XEMJ was on, no time to check AM band thoroughly
1240 XEVM was on, not checked, but see 107.1
1270 KEPS-Tejano-1-2-7 is standard ID pronounced as in English,
The Border's Numero Uno Tejano Station. DJ in Spanish, ad in
English, allergic to cable bills?
1320 XECPN listed, was on; see 107.9
1360 XEIK listed, was on; see 107.9. Certainly not yet moved to
1120 as claimed by Cantu' website via Arctic Radio club via
Radio Nuevo Mundo
1520 "La Montan~ita" ID at 1952 heard before Eagle Pass when
checking for KOMA; perusing lists later, I may have misheard
"La Norten~ita", MAV's slogan for XEVUC, Allende, Coah.
AM BANDSCAN FROM LAREDO
790 XEFE was off early at 0348 check; MAV listing says sked is
1200-0600 UT.
960 XEK had open carrier at 0522 check; MAV says 1155-0400. This
is the one station I easily spotted in a walk into Nuevo
Laredo with big call letters on the top of the building
1000 XENLT at 0522 was greeting various colonias with sound-
effects such as wolf-howls, during call-in taking dedications.
0600 opening R. Fo'rmula network program from DF "Bionatura,
el programa de la salud". MAV says station is permanently
linked with Me'xico DF, 1200-0600 only
1090 XEWL was off at 0524 check; 1157 s/on, 1159 joining R. Red
network program Monitor [which I also had been hearing on
the 4290 third harmonic from Saltillo]. MAV says 1200-0200
1340 XEBK, El Norten~azo listed in MAV
1370 was running open carrier around 0345 and at 0448 checks; MAV
says XEGNK, R. Mexicana, 1200-0200 UT
1410 XEAS listed, sister to 101.5
1550 XENU was on, but not paid attention to; MAV says "La
Poderosa". On one of the newsgroups, a European was wanting
info on the group of this name, but I think it is just a
slogan used independently by various stations, e.g. XERF
IMPRESSIONS OF LAREDO, TEXAS. It seemed a much larger city than the
last time I visited, perhaps 25 years ago? And no doubt it has grown.
Now a bustling port of entry thanks to NAFTA, and many of the local
arteries are clogged by 18-wheelers. Putting their routing under
control is a subject of local controversy. Media-wise, despite a
population between 100K and 200K, Laredo is deficient, with NO public
radio, NO public TV, not even an ABC affiliate; no local TV stations
have stereo; of course a lot more is on cable. I like to check out
university and public libraries. The public library downtown was
closed, and a new library building to the northeast in bright primary
colors was not yet open. Laredo Community College on the west side has
a nice campus and a spacious library; during the break when I was there
a dozen internet computers were idle, though supposedly reserved for
students. A few were set aside for E-mail and chat so the others could
be reserved for research, but I could access Hotmail only on the
latter; unfortunately, all the CPUs were in locked boxes so no disks
could be used. Texas A&M University has a very new campus on the
northeast outskirts, with a nice new library, several sit-down internet
computers, in contrast to LCC which required standing and thus briefer
usage due to fatigue; also idle at TAMU and I could use them without
restriction. Downtown has narrow, one-way and blocked streets, but one
can park free at a mall and walk across the nearby bridge to Nuevo
Laredo--or brazenly wade across in the other direction, as I saw
someone doing.
THE WAY BACK
As I got closer to San Antonio on I-35, I kept checking for public
radio stations on 88.3 and 89.1. The latter was never heard, but
finally the former became audible with why; hoped to have backup
transmitter for 89.1 on the air soon. KPAC 88.3 was certainly not up to
full strength.
620 still had heterodyne, day and night, now known to be XEGH
840 R. U'nica news network, gigantesca, M&W, from USA source
1350 KRHD Duncan OK was off as I went through Duncan
1520 KOMA OKC audible Jan 8 at 1600 UT near San Saba, skywave
1570 Frederick OK KTAT was silent the last time I was in the area,
but is now back on, heard Jan 8 at 2120 with MOYL-type format,
ad for Public Works Authority, Hotel Frederick

Received my lowest powered Japanese today in the form of one of the
lighthouse weather stations on the coast of Japanese, operating in the
AM mode. Received a beautiful photo, an arial view of the Southern tip
of Hokkaido, at Ekimo. The station operates on 1670.5 khz with 50 watts
of power! A full detailed card. I allready had one of the low powered
100 watters QSL'd from several years ago (NHK 1584 khz). Really a
beautifiul card. These stations operate with repeated weather
conditions in the area around the lighthouse. All are 50 or 20 watts in
the AM mode.
