RADIO FEST 98
The Ontario DX Association invites radio enthusiasts of all interests
and all levels to join us for the event of the year, Radio Fest 98.
This 1998 convention of the ODXA promises to be one of the best events
in recent years for radio hobbyists.
Regular releases will be distributed and we invite you to pass them on
to anyone whom you believe would be interested. Here are the details to
this time:

presenters) : Guest panel discussion on our theme "Communications Into

The KXOL transmitter has been installed, it is diplexed on the same
antenna as KSOS. Some power has been delivered to the new Harris DX
l0kw Xmtr, PPL promises more witin 10 days.
Some very low power testing to prove lack of intereference between the
two stations, will take place next week. Absent of problems we could
power up by July 28th with at first a KSOS simocast, original KXOL
programming will be ready in late August.
We will quickly confirm all DXer reports at this address.

WTDY (1670 AM) recently boosted its signal.
So much so apparently that the station can be heard on the northern
Oregon coast about a mile from the Pacific Ocean.
Operations Manager Glenn Gardner got a letter last week from Patrick
Martin of Seaside, Ore., who said he'd caught the WTDY morning farm
show and weather report at about 5 a.m. July 1.

Drake SPR4 and 40 metre longwire
I've finally dusted off the SPR4 after a few years of inactivity. Not
much DX noticed from home as yet but sunrise on July 11th provided the
following:
909 2129 BOTSWANA. VOA relay, quite readable and clear in English
with interviews and numerous ID's. At times unid Asian was
mixing, probably RRI Sorong or DYLA.
1215 2105 PHILLIPINES. DYRF Cebu, nice signal and always dominant
over cochannel low powered Aussies. Religious style music and
fast paced announcer made references to World Cup scores of
France/Croatia semi-final.
1530 2119 SAO TOME. VOA relay, good signal and very clear in English
until 5TAB 1539 here in Adelaide signed on. VOA Africa
references continually mentioned and at times an unid Asian was
underneath

along US 30 near Mountville, PA. Everywhere else I went

station very good with Walt Whitman bridge construction
information. This signal covered the entire downtown area
and well into the NJ suburbs, and was the only station

gets out well. IDs simple as "Penn's Landing's WPIC".

very well. Station has NOT moved to 1630 kHz as had been

signal along I-76. Woman with loud voice talking about the

1610 WNDX581 TN, Memphis 7/13 1420 At least one of the 3 listed
stations for Memphis airport is active. (TRH-TN)
1620 WPJM404 VA, Unknown location 7/12 0102 One of the VA TIS
stations was in with tape loop about Blue Ridge Mountains,
George Wshington National Forest, and the Appalachian
Trail (TRH-PA2).
1630 HAR MI, Detroit area 7/9 1952 Of the various HAR stations on
1630, I noted only a strong OC well over one other station
with tape loop by man. (TRH-MI)
WPJR342 MI, Roseville 7/11 2321 Good signals in central PA with
"Highway advisory radio is located at I696 at I-94, and is
operated on a frequency of 1630 kHz. This system is a
public service of the Michgan Department of
Transportation." Fair-good over another MI DoT station
with announced location somewhere on I-75. (TRH-PA2)
WQO740 PA, Palmer Heights? 7/11 2339 Fair-good with ID, talk
about various work areas near Hwy 33/22, mentioned web
site www.22renew.com. Gets out pretty well. (TRH-PA2)
1640 WPKX724 PA, Valley Forge / Downington-Lionville 7/11 2050
Stations at exit 23 and 24 are on the air and there are
signs for them posted on I-76. Not sure if the other
stations in the network were on, but if they were, they
sure didn't get out well. Relays NOAA weather at times.

Does anyone have up-to-date contact information for KFQC Davenport IA
on AM 1580? I have tried to QSL them for years, but without luck. They
seem to change ownership and address all the time. My last contact
there was in March 1998 with then Program Director Marshall Garrison
(who of course promised to QSL but didn't). The address was 320 W. 4th,
Davenport, IA 52801. Their phone was (319) 323-7191, but it doesn't
work anymore. Directory information gave another number, (319)
322-1580, which also didn't work. I would appreciate any help in
getting in touch with them.

(St. Louis, MO) -- KKWK-1380 pulled the plug on it's controversial talk
format at midnight CDT (0500 UTC) on July 13, and has switched to 24
hours of jazz. The music played is similar to that KIRL-1460 used to
play overnights, before KIRL went daytime-only. All of it's talk show
hosts, including Onion Horton, Don Clark, Virvus Jones, Mark Kasen and
Pete Parisi, were axed in the move. The failure of KKWK's talk format
could be pointed to a lack of a seven-second delay, which keeps
profanity off the air. Profanity could be heard on KKWK's talk shows,
unlike with it's counterparts (all of which have seven-second delays),
KTRS-550, WGNU-920 and KMOX-1120.
A new General Manager has been hired, in the person of 20-year St.
Louis radio veteran Doug Eason. A new air staff should be in place
within the next two weeks. As of last report, Onion Horton is
negotiating to stay on as a DJ. KKWK has not been the only station to
undergo a complete format change...WALC-104.1 (KKWK's former sister
station) has dumped it's Modern AC format for hard rock, programming
around Howard Stern's morning show. No air staff have been hired yet.
The station is known as "Extreme Radio 104.1".

I just received a very nice letter from KOA Chief Engineer Jan Chadwell
whom I have communicated with numerous times in the past.
Mr. Chadwell states that KOA will be doing some major construction at
their transmitter site just south of Parker, CO during the next 2
months as they replace their oldest transmitter with a new solid state
unit. I'm not sure which one is getting replaced but from a previous
letter I know their main is a Continental 317C-2 and their backup is a
GE BT50. My guess would be the GE is the oldest.
This probably has nothing to do with the lightning hit that put them
off the air for 2 1/2 hours recently. It appears that this was all
planned well before that.
Mr. Chadwell kindly invited me to observe some of the proceedings as
they make this new installation. I'll make some posts on this activity
for everyone's information.
By the way the antenna at KOA is a 665 foot guyed tower. Also for those
interested in such things KOA is a Jacor Communications owned station.

All of these heard in Lemmenjoki, Lapland, Finland January 1998.
Anybody who knows the correct addresses? WERD has changed calls?

IRCA Mexican Log, 5th Edition
The IRCA is proud to announce the release of the 5th edition of its
MEXICAN LOG. The IRCA MEXICAN LOG log lists all AM stations in Mexico
by frequency, including call letters, state, city, day/night power,

This annual edition contains 310 pages, 8 1/2" x 11" size, 3-hole
punched, loose leaf format with over 5,400 A.M. Radio station listings
