[HCDX]: New SW station from Central African Rep

Within the next few days the first signals from a new short wave station
from Bangui, Central African Republic, will be heard on short wave.

UN Radio Manurca is the name of a new station which commenced broadcasting
on FM in Bangui a couple of months ago. The station is now due to launch a
regular 24 hrs a day short wave service later this month. The station is
run by the UN and was etablished in connection with the upcoming elections
due later this year, and it MAY be closed down after the elections. If that
happens the studies (built by DR Radio Denmark) and the transmitters
(supplied and installed by ST Broadcast Service, Denmark) will be moved
somewhere else - most likely to the Philippines.

Anyway - UN Radio Manurca will start the first test transmissions on short
wave from Bangui on September 11th 1998 (or thereabout) on a frequency of
11300 kHz. The tests will carry announcements in English and French. Later
other out-of-band frequencies in the range 7 - 11.6 MHz will be tested -
for instance in the region 9180-9260 kHz. The aerial will put most of the
signals straight up in the air with an angle take off of some 60 degrees.
Not good for overseas DX'ers but with 20 kW the station should make it
worldwide at one time or another.

E-mails with details on reception quality are welcomed at
>sptek@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx< but will not be QSL'ed. Reception reports
are welcomed at this address: UN Radio Manurca, ST Broadcast Service, P. O.
Box 202, DK-7400 Herning, Denmark. Please include return postage (2 IRC's
or 2 US dollar). Correct reports will be verified by a QSL-card.

When regular transmissions commence UN Radio Manurca plan to carry BBC
programmes at 1630-2100 UTC (incl. language courses) followed by non stop
music at 2100-0600 UTC. Normal transmission will be in French and Sango.
