Ken Alexander - kena@xxxxxxxxxxxx

The Ontario DX Association will be running a contest for Medium and
Longwave DXers during the month of February, 1999. It's called the 2
Down Challenge and anything "hearable" below 2 MHz is fair game. The
contest is open to ODXA members and non-members alike and I'm hoping you
would run the following promo for it in the AM-DX Newsflash until the
end of February.

THE ODXA 2-DOWN CHALLENGE #4

The ODXA 2-Down Challenge challenges you to hear stations that you just
can't hear on shortwave, covering the frequency spectrum from 2.0 MHz
down to DC (0.0 kHz) The range consists principally of the Long Wave
band (utilities, beacons and transatlantic broadcast stations - with
luck!), the AM Broadcast Band and the 160 metre ham band ("top band").
The first contest held February 1994 showed that there is interest in
the club covering these areas and that those who entered had a great
time doing it. It's been two years since the last Two-Down, so here's
the rules of this game:

Eligibility: All DXers, regardless of location. You need not be a
member of the ODXA to enter. However, there is an entry fee for
non-members. See below.

Monitoring Period: The UTC month of February, 1999.

Frequency Range: 0.0 kHz to 2000 kHz, inclusive. All modes of
transmission (e.g. AM, SSB, CW, Fax, RTTY....) are eligible.

Point Count: 1 point for each of the 12 Canadian Provinces & Territories
(max. 12 points); 1 point for each of the lower 48 States plus
Washington DC (max 49 points); 1 point for each radio station
transmitting from outside of the above two areas (no max). Unlike the
shortwave DX-Challenge, country of origin is not the basis of scoring.

A 'station' outside Canada and continental USA is defined as a
transmission that is unique in both transmitter location and frequency
(e.g. Radio Rebelde, Cuba, may transmit from both Santiago and Havana.
If heard with the same programming on their two different frequencies
these two 'stations' would count for 2 points). But a ham station may
not be logged more than once in the 160 meter band.

Entry Fee : Free for ODXA members, $5.00 Cdn for non-members. Cheques
payable to Ontario DX Association.

Prizes: Entrants will be divided into three groups, those from Ontario,
those from the rest of North America, and those from outside North
America. The winner in each category will be the person with the
greatest number of points, and will receive a current book from the ODXA
Mail Order or a gift certificate for same. All entrants will receive a
certificate.

All entrants and their point scores will be listed in an upcoming issue
of DX Ontario.

Entries: Include the following details in each log: UTC date & time,
station name/callsign, frequency and mode, language (if any), reception
quality, sufficient data to confirm postive identification of station
and location (location = transmitter site, not studio site). Do not
submit tentative logs or unidentifieds. Your point count should be
clearly listed.

Deadline: Send your complete entry to Two-Down Challenge, Ken Alexander,
53 Twelve Oaks Dr., Aurora, Ontario L4G 6J4 or by E-mail to
<kena@xxxxxxxxxxxx>, to arrive by March 15, 1999.

Checked the FCC database, 580 OR. still shows up as KCMX and 880 as KTMT
as of 12/31. I'll have to listen for this instead... So don't know if
IRCA AM Flash is correct on this or not.

Called KNRO-600 Redding yesterday, they said they're still KNRO, not
KGNT yet, their application is still into the FCC for the call change,
though I haven't seen a trace of an application anywhere, including M
Street or the FCC database!

Keep an eye on 1690/1550 CO. they should be swapping calls to KDDZ and
KADZ respectively, they were KADZ and KDDZ on Wednesday when I
checked...

KSTN test was on last night, though coming in very bad here u/XEXX and
I'm only 80 miles from Stockton! Comes in daytime here better..

Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

As of 1/1/99, The same call is being used. ID at 2059.50 EST 1/1 "If
you've misssed a day, you've missed alot. 580, KCMX-Ashland". Checked at
2159.59 for an ID for 880, but they were running ESPN, and no ID before
the hour. (PM-OR)

1470 Sacramento now KRAK. Checked 1470 Sacramento at SSS, in strong with
ID "Classic Country 1470, KRAK, and Gold Country ninety-three-seven, 8
minutes after 5:00", plays old classic C&W tunes like Charlie Pride,
etc...
***
Albert Lehr - Livermore, CA - alehr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

As of this morning, Sacramento 1470 is still KOME. They IDed as 97.3
KRAK and KOME-AM at 1001:30, PST. At other times they ID as "Gold
Country 1470, KRAK."

530 - TIS CO, Pueblo (Highway 50 West and Elizabeth St.). Open carrier.
There are signs for this on I-25 coming into Pueblo from the
South (didn't notice any signs from the North).
 540 - XEWA - relays XEW.
800 - KLDC CO, Brighton - appears to be 24h NSP now. Gospel music.
Coverage range only 5 mile radius due to XEROK.
800 - XEROK CHIH, Ciudad Delicias - New slogan is "La Ley".
1350 - KGHF CO, Pueblo - towers taken down! Station is on the air, but
not from it's original QTH. Suspect sharing transmitter site
with KCSJ now. Signal is weaker here in the Denver area.
1480 - KAVA CO, Pueblo (ex-KRRU) - format is SS, slogan is "La Ley". Has
        "Radio Unica" programming. //1490-KXRE.
1490 - KXRE CO, Manitou Springs - same as KAVA above. Signal as heard in
Colorado Springs is much improved from what it used to be. Legal
ID mentions both KAVA Pueblo and KXRE Colorado Springs. Note:
Colorado Springs in legal ID - not Manitou Springs. //1480-KAVA.
1570 - KHPN CO, Loveland - POWERFUL signal at night. Either is approved
for much higher power or has been leaving it's day power on.

* Tom Reiser - Chicago IL - ReiserT@xxxxxxx

I thought that list members would be interested to know that WBBM has
done a slight alteration of how they handle announcements related to
traffic and weather. They now refer to traffic and transit on the 8's
and then they run the weather right after that. In other words, there
really has not been a change as to when the items appear, just the
formatting.
AKA the snowbox
***
* Mike - pietruk@xxxxxxxxxx

WBBM has also slightly changed is station identifier to "Newsradio 780"
from "NewsRadio 78". The reason, according to the Robert Feder column in
the Chicago Suntimes, was to recognize the digital nature of more and
more radios being sold these days.

fix mine. All I get is a buzz on mine and I cannot get my Radio West

anyone in my area who knows how to fix these. I'd be willing to send it
to someone and have them fix it for me for a reasonable fee. If anyone

Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

You know I have been complaining all season about how poor conditions
have been. Well tonight they are poor too, nut I decided to try soething
I haven't done in a long time. I disconnected the Ground rods from the
Eastern Beverage and connected my 1500' radial that runs directly under
the beverage. Well CX weren't any better, but the beverage' gain dropped
off maybe 10 DB. In the process of that many of the stronger stations
are weaker, gibing a chance the weaker stuff under on many frequencies
take over or QRM the channel. The beverage seems about as directional to
the most part, but boy are alot the stronger signals much weaker now.
One care in point, Seattle on 1250 is generally fair at night off the
Eastern Beverage, now with this arrangement, Seattle is in the mud
almost gone with an UNID Gospel station on the channel. I think might be
WREN. I haven't heard them since the move to KS City. 1560 has WQEW all
alone, yes all alone, no Bakersfield for over an hour, WQEW with Disney
(ugh). Many channels are just a mumble mess. It is unbelieveable what
something like this can do even with CX poor. If it wasn't for all the
strong signals, then alot more DX would be heard. Interesting, two or
three stations u/KGO, KNBR, and so on. KMOX on top of KPNW. Heard WBZ
on top of KTWO with lots of New England wx. 1600 Khz is a garbled mess
with KATZ-St. Louis there, some other black station, C&W, etc. No
Seattle on 1250, just a mess of stations. I didn't heard WJVA on their
test, but they were there tonight. A nice ID on the hour u/o KYIZ. With
this arrangement, it feels like I up and moved somewhere else. Very
interesting.

1610 Hearing a station on 1610 today (1/5), during daylight hours,
giving NOAA weather for Washington, DC. Possibly a new TIS or
change of format for nearby TIS (?). Fighting for the frequency
with 1610 at George Mason University, Fairfax, VA - which is
always dominant and strong here in Springfield (10 miles south of
       Wash, DC).

It is hard to tell who this is without an exact location. But here is
my guess after a search of the FCC database. If you have a chance give
them a call and let us know what they say!
There are several transmitters licensed to the Commonwealth of
Virginia in the Fairfax County area. One of them, the only mobile is
licensed to to operate on 1610 and 1620 and the other six, permanent are
licensed to operate on 1620. The mobile transmitter, of course, could
pop up anywhere. The call sign is not in the WTB data base yet, but the
application file number is D110173.

For the record, most TIS transmitters are built (or can be built) to
receive and re-broadcast NOAA weather stations. Many TIS operators will
re-broadcast NOAA weather for testing when installing the transmitters
or when they are not running their normal message.
