Actually, the official internationally agreed upon standard is:

YYYY-MM-DD

Leading zeros included.  That is an ANSI and ISO standard, and has been 
adopted by the Japanese and SA's, if I remember correctly.

I believe this is a new standard that has been proposed/ratified by the
standards mob wherever they live in Europe.

It also has the nice side effect of allowing an easy sort of files by
date, so that is how I save things here.
