I've also used the electric fence wire here, with good success.  One
difference here is that due to the wide range of ambient temperatures (-40C
to +40C) I definitely can't string it "fiddle tight".  The contraction
really adds up in a wire a 1/4 mile long, and I had a chance to ponder that
while I was repairing an antenna one cold winter's day!
