All this reading about coastal effects makes me feel a bit land-locked. The scenery in my area (Black Forest, Germany) is probably as good as anywhere along the US Pacific coast, but for the ocean coast I have to travel 500 km at least. Only water of some importance is the river Rhine. I am afraid this does not qualify for "coastal effects"............

I fully agree - from here it is 700 km (almost 500 miles) to the nearest ocean.
But let me note something more: according to my experience with the coast conditions in Denmark (on MW) I think there is already difference some 10-20 km from the coast. Where the radio waves disappear to - I really do not know...
