GLEANINGS

ALBANIA- R. Tirana English to NAm: 0130-0145 on 6115, 7160; 0330-0400
on 7160 (Bob Thomas, CT, WORLD OF RADIO 1010) Have not checked 0130 yet,
but at 0330 7160 blocked by BBC Ascension, and Tirana seemed to be on
6115 with poor modulation, adjacent splatter (Glenn Hauser, OK / GH DX
REPORT 99-51, Nov. 11)

ANTIGUA- Hello Glenn, Since you were the one who hooked me on harmonics
years ago (I remember when you use to post them to the SWBC clubs and
they didn't want any part of it), here is a late breaker. We have been
having a ball on VHF low band with the skip and all coming in. Might be
something your readers and radio audience would be interested in:
2000-2100 UTC 35.620 (AM) Deutsche Welle SWBC broadcast, second harmonic
of 17.810 coming from Antigua in German. IS signal, news in German, etc.
First SWBCer in the VHF low band I have heard in quite some time. The
VHF low band has been hot hot hot lately (see my October MT feature).
(Larry Van Horn, NC, Oct 28, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING / GH
SHORTWAVE DX REPORT 99-48, November 1)

ARMENIA- V. of Armenia English is now: daily 2115-2145 on 9965, 4810;
Sun 1000-1030 on 15270, 4810. 9965 has interference from China (Eugene
Gebreurs, RVI Radio World Nov 7 via WORLD OF RADIO 1011 / GH DX REPORT
99-51, Nov. 11)

AUSTRIA- [non]. The first day of ORF's new Sackville relay to WNAm at
1600 on 17865 was a bust Oct 31. We got a few minutes of country fill
music, evidently lacking the proper feed, and transmitter turned off at
1603* never to return. This broadcast has been planned for months, so
why should it be so hard to bring it off? While Sunday may be a prime
day for listeners, it is not for full-time workers (Glenn Hauser, OK/ GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-48, November 1)

AUSTRIA- [non]. I meant to follow up the report of first-day 1600 relay
SNAFU. On Nov 1 at 1600, 17865 via Canada had French rock music, typical
fill; at 1606 started "Special edition of Report from Austria" on
worldwide prostitution. Special edition is code-word for backup tape,
either from Montreal, Sackville, Wien or Moosbrunn, lacking the live
feed. It was cut short around 1628 for IS, and at 1630 the current
Spanish program actually mentioning November 1. Occasional subsequent
checks found English at 1600 was in fact the current day's program. So
they finally got it going (Glenn Hauser, OK / GH DX REPORT 99-51, Nov.
11)

BELGIUM - [non]. RCI has abandoned its evening NAm frequency of 13670,
now used by RVI via Bonaire including English at 2230, very good Oct 31
including Radio World on Sunday; however, new 11980 Bonaire relay at
0400 UT Monday carried classical music show instead of RW, so is that
now on UT Sunday? (Glenn Hauser, OK/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-48,
November 1)

BELGIUM- [non]. Unlike last week Nov 1, when RVI Radio World did not
appear UT Monday at 0400 on 11980 via Bonaire, the same transmission
Nov 8 did contain Radio World UT Monday; anyhow it is more reliable UT
Sunday 2230 on 13670 (Glenn Hauser / GH DX REPORT 99-51, Nov. 11)

CANADA - [non]. RCI's 17820 is an erstwhile Sackville frequency going
back sesquidecades, but not any more. The site has been moved to Skelton
for English at 1430, poor here Oct 31. The only Sackville 16mb frequency
here in our mornings for B-99 is 17710 (Glenn Hauser, OK/ GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-48, November 1)

CHINA PR.- . 15070 is active! No, not BBC--- it's a China National Radio
outlet, per a 1200 UT check Nov 3. I only wish one could get site info
from the Asian Broadcasting Institute. Signal level: SIO 444. Now you
know how happy I feel about having a big time receiver to twiddle the
dials around (the SW8). [Later:] Glenn: I have once again checked up on
15070 kHz at 12 UT and I am still hearing the China National Radio
domestic outlet which I heard last week. I just received Passport to
World Band Radio 2000 on Thursday and since there is no such listing of
this in the Blue Pages, this is a new station that has yet to be
reported or monitored anywhere. I'm curious as to whether anyone in the
Asian region is listening to it. Since 13 UTC is 7am CST, and you may be
in the sunrise path, check up on this for me. (Joe Hanlon in
Philadelphia, WORLD OF RADIO 1011 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-51, Nov.
11) Not heard until Nov 11 around 1230, quite strong but fluttery with
domestic service. Such propagation paths vary widely. Perhaps just to
spite BBC (Glenn Hauser, OK SHORTWAVE/ GH DX REPORT 99-51, Nov. 11)

COLOMBIA- Clandestine: Voz de la Resistencia, 6261.15, Oct 31 2215-2231*
Tune-in to Spanish folk music, M&W announcers, talk, IDs; TV theme
music, including from "Dallas". S/off with anthem; fair. Also heard Nov
1, 2, 4 at 2200 tune-in to 2229* (Brian Alexander, PA, WORLD OF RADIO
1011 / GH DX REPORT 99-51, Nov. 11)

COSTA RICA- Notes from James Latham on RFPI Mailbag Oct 29: Things had
been going fine when near the end of the rainy season and as the windy
season was about to start, the 6975 antenna failed atop the 200 foot
tower. Waited a few days for the winds to let up, but finally could wait
no longer and climbed the tower. Had been running the 30 kW transmitter
at 35 kW for a week, but the cubical quad antenna started to glow at
night - not sparking discharge or corona, but the cooper-clad steel
wire itself was heating up as resistance. There are 4 diamond-shaped
loops. The driver which had been glowing then broke and was patched. So
some airtime was lost about a week ago. 6975 is back on at the original
30 kW level. Had beefed up the driver. But distortion still needs to be
worked on, requiring juggling transformers, setting correct bias, etc.
Old driver had severe problem for a couple nights a week ago with heavy
AC buzz [previously mentioned here and thought to have been explained
as an audio input problem, but...]. Finding the source was quite a
problem; at first thought it might be external interference. Started
with looking at power amplifier, driver, modulator: all OK; low power
oscillator. Finally found frequency synthesizer had 12v power supply
capacitor cooked and exploded after years of use, so it was running AC
into the oscillator. One capacitor was then replaced with another of not
quite the right value. A real chore to find this problem. There is still
a slight buzz, which should not be audible. 21460 is off the air waiting
for a tube which may take three weeks to arrive. Could run the frequency
at low power, but not worth it. When back, will be on a better antenna.
15049 had a problem when its power was also increased slightly. Power
switching box was getting hot, as well as the cable into the
transmitter. Fortunately the building is cement, not wooden, so there is
no chance of fire. Now back on 24 hours. Debra Latham added that the
long-delayed Sept-Nov issue of VISTA should be reaching members any day
now, and the next issue should be back on schedule [i.e. due December 1]
(Notes by Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING/ GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-48, November 1)

COSTA RICA- AWR is selling TIAWR. Its final broadcasts as TIAWR will be
UT Tuesday November 2 0000-0400 and 1000-1300 on 5030, 6150, 7375, 9725,
13750, 15460. There are 5 transmitters at Cahuita, so number 1 will be
on either 7375 or 15460. The finale, titled "Remembering Yesterday" will
offer specially endorsed QSL cards. Report to Shella [sic] Oliver,
Adventist World Radio, Apartado 1177, 4050 Alajuela, Costa Rica. AWR is
beefing up its SW facilities in Guatemala instead [not Dominican
Republic as once reported], including the original 5 kW TIASD unit from
Alajuela, Costa Rica (AWR press release via Adrian Peterson, summarised
by Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT
99-48, November 1) --- THE REAL UNANSWERED QUESTION IS: What was wrong
with the Cahuita setup in Costa Rica, with its multiple relatively
high-powered transmitters from a seemingly good location? It was quite
unreliable, but that goes for all other AWR sites we know of... (Hauser/
GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-48, November 1)

COSTA RICA- RFPI announced at 1930 Nov 2 that 6975 would be off the air
for 1 or 2 weeks. The cubical quad antenna on a 200-foot tower has been
torn apart by high winds and will have to be rebuilt. 21460 is also off
awaiting a new tube, so for now RFPI is only on 15049, 24 hours (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1010 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-49, November
3)

COSTA RICA - [non?]. 9725 is still in a receiver memory from the days
when TIAWR carried Wavescan, so I punched it Fri Nov 5 at 1250 and there
was a religious drama in Spanish, big signal like TIAWR used to have.
Quick check of old 5, 6 and 13 MHz channels showed nothing. Eagerly
awaited ID at hourtop, but cut off at 1254* not to return. If this was
TIAWR, three days after supposed final broadcast, please QSL (Glenn
Hauser / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-50, Nov. 5)

COSTA RICA- RFPI caught running both my previous and new Mundo Radial
Spanish DX tapes back to back, Thu Nov 4 at 1427 going from one to
another on 15049. Possibly this would be a time to hear MR in following
weeks. [non] DW wasted no time in taking over RFPI's temporarily
inactive USB frequency 21460, noted in Arabic before and after 1500 Nov
4, //21755 with DW ID and brother-seeking theme (Glenn Hauser / GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-50, Nov. 5)
