test from 9:00pm-10:00pm PST (12:00 am-1:00 am EST). The test will
consist of "Music of your life". The test will be run at KTNS's full

Sunday, January 30, 2000 - WMAL-630, Washington, DC will conduct a DX
test from 1:00 am - 1:30 am EST. The test will consist of Morse code Ids
inserted into regular programming at the top of the hour. According to
CE John Butler, the station will be running "When Radio Was" at this
time, an anthology of classic radio shows.

Monday, January 30, 2000 - WILM-1450, Wilmington, DE will conduct a DX
test from 1:00 am - 3:00 am EST. The test will include a combination of
tones, sirens, and unique music, all correlated to specific times, and
will run during the test time except for a brief period after the top of
each hour. A special millenium QSL, which may be seen in the January
2000 PopCom, will be issued. Prepaid phone calls at 302-656-8134 will
be accepted, and reception reports with a SASE are preferred.

This week the FM replacement for CKTA officially came on the air. They
are on 93.3 MHz with legal call of CHHK, but the only IDs given are
"93.3 The Hawk". The AM outlet on 1570 is now simulcasting the FM, and
is scheduled to do so for 4 months. So, this will be the last DX season
to catch CKTA. With CJCY going last year, and CKTA in 2000, southern
Alberta is becoming an excellent area for DXing, as the locals are
getting pretty scarce!

Radio station links its future to technology

WHEN BRIAN Cooley unfolds his vision of the Bay Area's newest radio
station, one that will deal just with technology, I don't know if I'm
talking to a genius or a madman. That's what makes for exciting times in
Silicon Valley: We get to watch pioneers of the new technologies at all
levels. Cooley, 38, a former news anchor at KPIX-FM during its ill-fated
news-talk format, will be programming the new KNEW-AM (910) as part of a
joint venture with AMFM Broadcasting (which owns seven San Francisco
stations, including KMEL, KKSF and KYLD) and CNET, the computer-
television and Internet publishing company. This is the first time an
Internet company has put programming on commercial airwaves, and that
marks either a step backward from new to older media, or a half-step
forward while the Internet world waits for the time when its so-called
"streaming media"will be heard on every appliance in our homes.
"We're reaching a world that CNET never could reach," says Cooley,
who was raised in Menlo Park. His father, Arnold, made disk drives at
Syquest. "Everything else we do is in the foreground. This is a chance
to reach people when they are doing something else, driving or working
out at the gym." Does anyone in this valley want all technology all the
time on radio? Cooley thinks so. His programming will be news about
technology, he says. But it won't be like "those weekend computer-geek
shows, expanded to a day." It won't be geared to people in the computer
industry - "early adopter geeks." Rather, it will be for everyday
working people such as school teachers and sales people who work around
the industry and are affected by it but don't know a lot about it. It
will be technology news -- what happened and what it means -- with a
little input from callers but not much. "We will talk to people who a
year ago woke up and found this technology everywhere around them and
realized, 'It's changing my life.' It will be a bona fide news format,
not a mouthpiece for CNET." Some of the information might be personal
investment information and stock tips. "We'll be looking at the world
through tech-colored glasses," he says. The program lineup hasn't been
announced. The start-up date is within two weeks but not officially
posted. The studios are still being built. The first people hired for a
15-person news staff include former KGO reporters Kim Foster and Kevin
Patrick, former KCBS reporter Tracy Romine and former KSFO host (when it
was briefly a liberal station) and television reporter Emil Guillermo.
"I feel like Andy Grove, being paranoid for a living," says Cooley.
"Either we're really right or really wrong. We don't have anything to
copy." The station came about after AMFM's local manager, Brent
Osborne, approached CNET to do a show on struggling KNEW, which is now
simulcasting KIOI's easy-listening music. Cooley suggested not a show
but a station format. Plans are to fill the air with tech talk from 5:30
a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays on the 5,000-watt station. Cooley isn't sure
what will be heard at night and on weekends, possibly KIOI's music, he
says. AMFM's Jimmy DeCastro has talked about CNN news or replays of the
weekday shows. The folks at AMFM, based in Dallas, expect to take the
format into other markets across the country if it works in the Bay
Area. CNET has been reaching some 25,000 people a day with its
streaming-media shows. It would shoot for 10 times that on the
commercial dial. "A company like ours," says Cooley, "can have all
the band width in the world, but we are handicapped by the fact that our
users don't. Radio broadcasting is great. Technically, as old as it is,
one beam is very elegant and has a `liveness' you can't duplicate."

1160 Fenton MI 1222 1/13 Several WWON Fenton IDs, "Classic Country" new
format. Back on air after absence/failure of urban religious format, and
sale of station. Noticed open carrier before 7 a.m. local, so perhaps
not 24 hours. Played old country and bluegrass mx, including a bizarre
song about a guy killing a "Knoxville girl" with a stick, and going to
jail. Transmitter had several momentary outages during first hour -
likely burning off the snow on the towers.

logged the other night... KTXX-1460 has also improved their signal,
they're still nonexistent at night here but daytime is not bad. I'd
LOVE to get KARR-1460 Kirkland to do a test for us sometime, that
station is never heard by anyone anywhere! I have a special love for
those calls too because they used to belong to 1400 in my hometown of
Great Falls, MT.! (KMON-560 country!)...

Heard slogans as "The Beat", plays Christian Contemporary Music (CCR).
Heard legal ID at 0705EST this morning. Still on this afternoon. Loud,
but does have a tight null at night and I even heard another station
under mentioning "Cedar Rapids". Xmtr is about 10 miles SSW from my QTH.
Denver now has the distinction of being the first city with 2 x-band
stations (correct me if I'm wrong...hi). Of course, everyone knows that
Denver has the most radio stations on AM of any major metro market (hi).

Looks like KOQI-1200, licensed to Soquel, CA, has been on the air
testing with continuous music since around 8 or 9 p.m. last night,
according to my chief engineer at KTOM/KTXX, who is friends with the CE
who built this station. The station was very strong driving home from
Salinas to Monterey this morning.
They are 25,000 watts non-directional from one tower today, but NO
STATION ID'S HAVE BEEN HEARD SINCE I'VE BEEN MONITORING THEM THIS
MORNING!! (Boo!)
Night-time power is listed as 10kw from a 4-tower pattern. They are
diplexing off the tower site that KIEZ-540 uses, southeast of the
Salinas, CA airport.
The engineer has some CD machines hooked up and a hodge-podge of
music has been heard, mostly old-country (Patsy Cline, Bobby Bare, Floyd
Kramer instrumentals, etc.) has been heard along with modern country,
big band/jazz, Spanish/Ranchera, and some operatic style recordings that
sound like they were recorded in the 1920s or '30s. There's also lots
of dead air between the cuts, but so far no IDs or legal IDs on the hour
or close to the hour.
The engineer who owns this, Wayne Woolard, was the old KDON-AM CE and
has worked for other stations around here. He's been anxious to get
this on the air and sell it to a prospective buyer.
Don't know how long it will stay on today or if it will be on tonight
and/or tomorrow. So far, I don't even know what the address for veries
is or will be, but I'll try to find out.

Jim Hilliker just sent word that KOQI-1200 Soquel (near Santa Cruz) CA
is on, testing; I just heard a call letter ID at 8pm PLT; a quick "KOQI
Soquel" over a country song. Good signal, on top of channel. Jim says
they're going to be 25kW days, 10kW nights with a 4 tower setup,
diplexing off KIEZ-540 near Salinas; apparently they're testing non-
directional right now. Don't know the power.

stop C&W music, apparently on 1 kw. night power, signal fairly

between songs. If their night signal is like these, shouldn't be
too much problem here, kinda listenable but not too good, either!

She told me that there are 150 stations in the network, but of
course did not know which one I was listening to (I still don't
know). I tried a web site that had the above info on it and it
was for a station in Kansas (I can't remember the call). Oh the
joy of DXing in the computer-satellite age! I suspect WCLN based
