Don't know if this could be of any use, but anyways:

Quite a while ago I used a program called 'Diamond Cut Audio Restoration
Tools' or similar to improve the quality of sampled vinyl recordings.
I was quite succesfull in removing hiss and clicks and the like, the
songs sounded much, much better afterwards.  One should have some
experience, though.  It's easy to make a recording sound better or worse
with just about the same number of mouse clicks :-)

Unfortunately, the tool got lost when my NT decided to crash one more
time...  It should be available for Download somewhere out there.
