1700". This was noted at 0320 EDT on April 15, 2000 with CNN

Foundation for Children.

1470 WFNT Flint MI has dumped talk radio for a mixture of oldies/
nostalgia music: "Unforgettable AM 1470". Yes, music on AM! I
don't see how they can compete with oldies 96 WHNN, and nostalgia
WOAP 1080. Maybe they will eventually go back to country? No more
Art Bell, Rush Limbaugh, Gordon Liddy, Mike Reagan, Ken Hamblin,
and Joy Browne. Some of the weekend talk shows may remain, e.g.

I can tell the DX isn't what it used to be. 15 years ago, I used to

1107 SPAIN, RNE5 synchros, 0500 UTC 17 April. Too weak for definite
ID, but presumed the one with time pips and then apparent news in
Spanish. A number of other European hets were audible in the
1000-1200 khz range, but no other produced audio. (Pimblett-AB)
1630 ARGENTINA, La Plata, 0730 UTC 17 April. Program of popular
music, with mostly SS songs, but the odd one in English,
including Billy Joel. Promos for a newsmagazine program, IDs as
"AM 1630, desde la provincia Buenos Aires...". Into news at
0800. Dominating the channel at this time over a weak KCJJ and a

IT WASN'T the protests from gay-rights groups. It wasn't the chiding of
critics. It wasn't bad ratings. San Francisco's No. 1 station, KGO-AM,
dropped psychobabbler Laura Schlessinger from its afternoon lineup so
the station could offer live local news-talk all day long. ``She brought
good numbers to the station,'' says station president Mickey Luckoff.
``Sometimes you have to be willing to sacrifice some numbers for what
will be a better fit.'' Not that Luckoff is losing Schlessinger and a
largely female audience, who apparently can't find comfort from a friend
or afford a professional counselor. Starting July 3, the host who has
drawn fire from gay groups for calling homosexuality a biological error,
will be heard on KGO's Disney-owned sister station, KSFO-AM. I've always
thought her witch's cackle is the real biological error. Schlessinger is
the No. 2 ranked show in her Bay Area afternoon slot, just behind KOIT-
FM's elevator music. She'll be joining Rush Limbaugh, who will be on
from 9 a.m. to noon on the station nicknamed KKKSFO by some. KSFO has
risen improbably from 36th to seventh in the ratings in an area known as
a bastion of liberalism. Despite claims to the contrary, Limbaugh and
his audience of 190,000 were stolen by Disney from Susquehanna's KNBR,
with promises the show would get more publicity and fit better with
other KSFO programming. (True, KNBR finally will be broadcasting sports
24 hours a day, but would it want to trade the No. 2 show in that time
slot for a syndicated sports talker? And now more than ever, the
station's ratings will reflect interest in the Giants. What happens when
the team is in the cellar?) KRON-TV anchor Pete Wilson will take the 2
p.m. KGO slot with a news-talk show, and the station will reinstate its
afternoon news at noon. Paul Harvey will air during the noon broadcast,
giving No. 1-rated Ronn Owens back his full three-hour slot. More than
most anchors, Wilson seems to telegraph his opinions. He started his
career in talk radio in Milwaukee. I'm guessing his smooth voice and
informed opinions will do well on KGO. I think almost anything local and
live is better than syndication on a station that has been at the top in
its market for an unprecedented 22 years running. ``We've been trying to
make this connection (with Wilson) for four years,'' says Luckoff. Dr.
Dean Edell's show will move to the 1-2 p.m. slot. And Jim Eason, who
downsized from the 50,000-watt KGO signal to the 5,600-watt sister
station several years ago, will cut down his North Carolina-based show
to an hour. His act these days mostly consists of reading newspaper
articles and changing the names (e.g. ``Hil-liary Clintong''). But I've
become a minor fan since he's been slamming the overblown, under-
educated hate talker Michael Weiner, whose show follows his. (Weiner,
who must have drawn guffaws when he applied to be dean of the University
of California-Berkeley's journalism school, mistakenly told his audience
recently that Iowa borders Canada, and he did a whole hour on scents,
calling pheromones ``pheronomes,'' even ignoring his wife when she tried
to correct him. This is a guy who thinks second-hand smoke is fine but
perfume should be made illegal and who hates all illegal immigrants
except Elián Gonzalez.) The guy does get ratings. But McDonald's sells
hamburgers. Does that mean it's high-quality? Washington-based Brian
Wilson, who just took the midmorning show at KSFO, will move to the 7-9
p.m. slot. Military and conspiracy buff Geoff Metcalf, who loses his
weekday afternoon spot, has been offered a weekend show. Big issue for
Metcalf recently: Should he boycott the gun-maker that committed the
horrendous constitutional violation of agreeing to put trigger locks on
its guns? No, Geoff, let's just leave them on the counter and let kids
take target practice on each other.""

Here's the latest on KFTA:
Ben Reed wrote: "Thanks so very much for your response. It was a
long process, and we even had to get the Coast Guard to relinquish the
call sign. We think that one of the problems was miscommunication
during the time the FCC was switching their call sign changes from a
paper trail to on-line. We have been KFTA since Feb. 24th.
On a side note, the LA Times is coming later this month to do a story
about the gringo (me!) who is doing a daily Spanish show. We've got a
lot of press about the format and call sign change.

of a program with which you could calculate sunrise/sunset times. I
didn't see any responses so inquired as to whether or not he ever got
one from somebody. He did and I have it available.

Recently Harold Ort, editor of Popular Communications Magazine, asked
me to edit a utility radio column for him. Beginning with the June
issue, a new column called "Utility Radio Review" will appear in the
magazine, which I will be responsible for. The column will cover news,
information and events taking place in the utility radio service that
are found between 30 kHz-30 MHz.
The new column will be reader oriented, and written with the beginner
and intermediate radio monitor in mind. It will emphasize a "how-to"
approach when monitoring topics are covered. The primary aim of the
column will be to help people enjoy the hobby by assisting them in
finding hot frequencies and providing the background information they
need in order to appreciate what they hear when monitoring.
The secondary aim will be to guide the reader to groups, organizations
and resources that will help them improve their monitoring skills. This
will include references to clubs, WebPages and monitoring publications,
as well as information on monitoring equipment and their manufacturers.
The advanced and master monitor of utility radio services will not be
forgotten, as their skills and knowledge will be welcome through their
contributions. I also hope to profile hobbyist who has been very
successful in their monitoring practice in the column.
At this time I am looking for those who are dedicated to monitoring
utility stations to help make the column a success for the readers of
Popular Communications Magazine. I welcome logs, news, and other
contributions about utility radio. These contributions can be emailed to
