Re: [HCDX] What rigs and antenna does everyone use?
My main receiver these days is a Drake R8B, which my father got me as
a gift last year. For a long time, I used a Lowe HF-150, but I will
probably sell that soon; a good receiver, but I don't really need it now.
I also have a Radio Shack DX-392 portable, which is their version of the
Sangean ATS-818CS with built-in cassette recorder. For emergencies, I
also have a BayGen Freeplay with shortwave, mediumwave and FM. I also
have a Zenith Trans-Oceanic G-500 from around 1950, which is in working
condition but which I mostly have for sentimental reasons.
My outdoor antenna is a 100-meter wire that feeds into an MFJ-16010
antenna tuner. (I'd better get to fixing it while the weather permits,
hi!) A ham friend who likes to experiment with loop antennas made two
for me. One is a tuned loop for most shortwave frequencies. The other
is a tuned box loop, 36 inches on each side, that is for mediumwave. I
use them both a lot, and they're a big help for nulling out local sources
of interference.
