I don't know if you've already looked but the hard core website (the 
url is on the footer) they have some good ideas for apartment 
dweller.  One antenna I've been experimenting with recently is a 
'broomstick' made after reading about it on the site.  It's quite a 
short one as it was made using scrap material to hand but I'm 
encouraged enough by the results to purchase materials to make a full 
size one.
