We are proud to announce for third time that the annual DX summer
meeting of Finnish DX Association will be held in Oulu, in Northern Finland.
The meeting will be arranged by Oulun DX-Klubi (DX-Club of Oulu), a local
branch of FDXA.
The Summer Meeting takes place on 1-3 of August 1997, beginning on
Friday afternoon, until Sunday afternoon.
Exact place is Virpiniemi Recreational Institute at Haukipudas, a small
village about 20 km's to the north from Oulu. And Oulu lies on the western
coast of North Finland.
Traffic links to Oulu are good: you can travel to Oulu from Helsinki by
air, train and bus. Oulu lies pretty close to border of Sweden, so you can
arrive via Sweden, too (i.e. border towns Haparanda and Tornio, about 125
km's from Oulu).
Almost 100 Finnish DX listeners are expected to participate in the
Summer Meeting. All foreign DXers as well as representatives of radio
stations are warmly welcomed to attend the meeting!

official publication of the International Radio Club of America (IRCA). IRCA
is a club devoted to the hobby of hearing distant stations on the standard
AM broadcast band. "DX Monitor" is published 30 times a year and contains
members' loggings, articles on radio stations, receiver reviews, technical
articles, DX tips, and other material of interest to the Broadcast Band
DXer. For more information, and a sample copy of DX Monitor, send 0.32 US

In the next few weeks WVNS, a new station licensed to Claremont, VA, 670
kHz, 20000 watts days, 5000 watts critical hours, directional antenna will
be hitting the air. Initial operation will be daytime only but at some
point in the future they will probably go fulltime, running 1000 watts at
night from a different transmitter site. Claremont is a small town on the
south bank of the James River roughly halfway between Richmond and Norfolk.
The stations studios, which are located in Norfolk, VA are under
construction. At the transmitter site in Claremont the 4 tower directional
array is up and construction of the stations State of the Art transmitter
building - a large, metal, overseas packing container on a concrete slab -
is complete. Installation of the transmitter, antenna phasing equipment,
etc. is scheduled to start within the next week or so. It is expected that
testing will begin within 3 to 6 weeks. Some of the equipment for the
station, including the towers and antenna phasing network came from the now
deleted CJSB-540 in Ottawa, Ontario.
Unfortunately the stations antenna pattern, which must protect several
existing stations including WFAN-660, WMAQ/WIEZ-670 and WCBM/WPTF-680 will
not favor reception in either Europe or Down Under. The main lobe is SE
from the site in Claremont over the Tidewater/Norfolk, VA area. There is
also a very minor lobe off the back to the NW. Off the sides of the pattern
to the NE and SW there are deep nulls. The directionals given are
approximate.
There will be some testing done from the station before they go on
regular schedule with a non-directional antenna pattern. It is expected
that testing will be done both during the day and during the Experimental
Period of 0000-0600 EST/0500-1100z. It is also very possible that a DX
Program, at least part of which will be non-directional, will be run during
the initial testing phase but nothing definite is scheduled yet.
When the station begins regular scheduled programming they will be
running a All News format. Reception reports may be sent to:

This information is directly from Pat and Dave Schmidt, who in addition
to being the Musings editor for the National Radio Club is a Contract
Engineer and is involved in building the new station. I will be visiting the
transmitter site when they are a bit further along with equipment
installation and will do my best to keep everyone informed of what is
happening and when it will happen.
On another note, Pat Murphy is also the Operations Manager for WVNZ in
Richmond, VA. This station, which operates on 990 kHz and was off the air
for several years recently returned. They are currently running 1000 watts
day, 10 watts night, non-directional. They are licensed for 10000 watts
day, 5000 watts night, directional day and night with different patterns and
a new transmitter site is under construction. The format of WVNZ is also
All News.

works for has also purchased the station on 1600 kHz in Chesapeake, VA and
some changes are planned there but I will cover that later.

After a break of more than two years Austria Radio (ORF -
Oesterreichischer Rundfunk) resumes broadcasting on Medium Wave 1.476, with
60kW from Vienna-Bisamberg, scheduled from 21. March The daily transmissions
(1700-2300 UTC) will consist of relays of "Oesterreich 1",the Home Service
news, information & culture channel; "Radio 1476", open access/educational
radio: programmes provided by free radio groups, students, journalistic
schools etc; but under the auspices and responsibility of ORF (due to
restrictions in the current broadcast law); relay of "Radio Austria
International", German and English services (2200-2300), with "Intermedia"
on Fridays. ("Intermedia" is the new name of RAI's media magazine
"Kurzwellen-Panorama".)
This is a low-budget test, and reception reports helping to establish
the range of transmission and quality of signal will be welcome. Useful
reports will be honoured with a special limited-edition QSL.

The sun is shining here in the Arctic. This is possibly my second last
report this season. NA relatively weak but the biggest surprise seems to
come from Africa:

IRCA Mexican Log, 4th Edition
The IRCA MEXICAN LOG log lists all AM stations in Mexico by frequency,
including call letters, state, city, day/night power, slogans, schedule in
UTC/GMT, formats, networks and notes. In addition, stations that have
changed frequency since 1990 are cross-referenced on the old frequency. The
call letter index gives call, frequency, city and state. The city index
(listed by state, then city) includes frequency, call and day/night power.
The log has been completely updated from the 1994 edition and carefully
cross-checked by IRCA members in Mexico and the US. This is an
indispensable reference for anyone who hears Mexican radio stations. Size
is 8 1/2" x 11" and three hole punched for easy binding (optional).

This is the Seventeenth edition and has been updated through September 1996.
This annual edition contains 312 pages, 8 1/2" x 11" size, 3-hole punched,
loose leaf format with over 5,500 A.M. Radio station listings from the
United States and Canada. Each station listing consists of its location,
frequency, call, format, network affiliation, station address, station
slogan, day and night transmitter powers. There are cross references by

From my point of view there should be a page for shortwave receivers
which contains all important data and gives a survey of all receivers which
were produced during the last ten years.
If you are looking for a used or new receiver you should have the data
at once at hand.
The same thing is with the antennas. On such a web page there could be
given tips to built an expensive or a cheap antenna or where such antennas
could be ordered.

WORLD OF RADIO update: we have some new times on WWCR, effective
immediately. The entire schedule is:

3215 (cancelled after March), Sun 0830 5070 (NEW), Sun 1000 3210, Mon 0030
5070, Tue 1330 15685. Note that all times will shift one UT hour earlier
April 6, but all frequencies remain the same.
FYI: I am again receiving E-mail, but using public computers so far lacking
the copy-and-paste feature. When that is restored, I expect to resume

Three good MW QSLs in one day - I can't remember when that last happened.
AUSTRALIA
1665 2MM Greek Radio, in a letter from v/s Demis Psomas: 2MM has been
running since June 1996, the first three months b'casts were solely
Greek mx with no annc, running into a 13m antenna. Since Sept '96 they
have been using a CFM antenna (looks like an an umbrella blown
inwards) located at St Peters, 3kM South of Sydney and a 400w
Broadcast Electronics (USA) transmitter. They are also on 99.3 FM in
Wollongong and have just initiated a new transmitter in Melbourne
simulcasting on 1629kHz running 100w, though it too will go to 400w in
the next few months. They run 24hrs and target the 600,000 Greek
Australians living in Sydney & Melbourne. Plans are to increase
coiverage to other regional centres during the next few months.
Demis apologises for the long delay in replying, his work-load has been
daunting to say the least, working 26-hour days and going 50 hours with just
one hours sleep (sounds like good DXer material to me!).

1250 Radio Miraflores, Lima, after a follow-up to a '96 report, I recived a
letter from Renzo Palma, Programming Director for their FM station on
96.1mHz, in ENGLISH! And very good EE too. Renzo says that R
Miraflores (which has been owned by his family since 1935!) is setting
up 6 web pages and has asked for my phone, e-mail and fax number.
Great news to have a Peruvian station so keen on hearing from it's
"fringe" listenership! Their QTH is as in WRTH: Manco Capac 495, Of

ST KITTS & NEVIS
895 Voice of Nevis, Charlestown, very friendly letter from Deli Caines,
News Dept/Announcer, after f/up to my '96 report which she says she
did reply to (so there is another one that got away!). Deli is from
the USA and is married to a Brit (who tells her that cricket is the
best sport in the world - I guess the Brits do have something going
for them, they did give NZ a trashing in the recent Test series). DEli
comments "It is always a pleasure receiving letters as yours and it
may interest you to note, we have had letters from New Zealand, USA,
Europe, Africa & Canada among other places. Happy DXing!!!"
