As I type this at almost 0200 PST, KGXL is still on the air
//KGIL-1260, with IDs for both stations on the hour. Has been in since
early this evening. Maybe on 24 hours now. Earlier they mentioned on
the air that the TIS in Culver City has moved from 1650 to 1690.
Signals here are fair, better in USB away from the KXBT-1640 splat. I
thought I would pass this along. Good DX.

The Argentine in 1620 is in nicely again. Music, teletalk, all

WWKB, 1520 kHz from Buffalo, New York. Fri 26 Dec 97 from 0142 to 0218
local time (GMT). Average SINPO 33433 with peaks much higher.
Very clear id's including "There's only one place for sports in
Buffalo and this is it--WWKB Sports Radio 1520." Larry Cotter
was the emcee sitting in for "Papa Joe".
Also heard another North American sports talkradio station on 1510KHz,
but weaker, with no positive ID other than "AM 1510".
Equipment is an ICOM IC-R70 with a Quantum Loop ferrite core antenna.
Radio received nothing but noise and interference while in AM mode, but
while tuned to LSB, WWKB punched right through.

COMMENTS
Over 4 and a half hours of TA's!! That was the best bar none night of
TA DX I have had ever. Two new countries and lots of new stations.
Wayne McRae alerted me to 1314 booming in while it was still daylight
here. That is a first for us. Now if we had been at the DX site at
Vallhalla Beach we would have heard even more. We spent the time on the
phone chasing the DX. We had HETS on EVERY split frequency at one time
or another from about 650 right through to 1600. This was also a first.
The biggest problem was chosing a HET to listen to. 1314 and 855 were
so strong that they were like a local with S meters at levels never
seen before for TA's. . Wayne and I thought we had moved to the East
coast. Hope that some of you in the mid west especially got some new
ones that night as they were there for the picking.

Religious Tx and Gospel Mx til Fade out at 2350. Amazingly
strong during peak!! NEW Station NEW Country # 35 on BCB.
Hearing that Big Band pirate again this morning....but now they have
moved up from 1689.7 khz to 1690 khz even. Playing Big Band
Instrumentals and Vocals. This time there is an Old Time DJ Talking
between songs ...giving names of songs and talking about the music,.
Sounds like a tape of an old time radio broadcast from the 30's or
40's. Hearing this from 0005 EST Tune-in 0030 now...and still
blasting in!! Sure wish we could figure out who this is. Maybe it's
a Pirate...but MAYBE it's a new X-Bander testing????

I am a life long AM DXer (age 53) and owner/operator of AM/FM combo
here in Randloph, Vermont (WCVR/WWWT). I am using a Kenwood TS 870
with homebrew antenna best described as a 25' vertical top-loaded with
a 200' East/West longwire -- an excellent all-purpose antenna.
I am getting loud sigs from 1314 NRK tonite. This is not too unusual
here in Central Vermont on winter nights. Also Spain on 684, England
on 693, Denmark on 1062, Croatia on 1134, and England on 1215. Lots of
strong TA carriers, too.
Most interesting to me, however, is the signal from KXBT on 1640 which
I have not logged previously and which has been Q5 at times over the
past hour or so (current time about 0400z). Good clear ID "KXBT...
Vallejo, Oakland, San Francisco". This is a thrill especially because
signals from the west are rare here. KMOX is about the farthest west
we ever hear, although sigs from Mexico City on 940, 900, and 730 come
through from time to time -- especially "La Q XEQ" on 940.
We get a lot of good signals from Venezuela, Colombia, Cuba and the
Carribean most nights.

Neil Kazaross mentioned "absolutely the best ever" European DX from his
home near Chicago, IL a couple of nights ago. He listed stations that
he hadn't even heard in Newfoundland a month earlier ! His latest
report spurred me to do some listening during the 0500 to 0800 UTC time
period (midnight to 3 a.m. local). Generally I've neglected this time
block because (a) I usually like to sleep then. and (b) with cold
weather, meddling non-DXers (police, etc.) operation from the car at
high-quality shore locations doesn't usually work out too well. Neil's
report of good high-latitude propagation and some really good
sunset-period reception here of stations such as Sweden-1179 gave me
the idea to do some tuning from the home QTH in Billerica, MA (25 km
from the seashore) between 0500 and 0800 UTC on 27 DEC '97.
It paid off ! I had my best-ever reception of Finland-963 and, at 0715
UTC, a nice sign-on from Faroes-531, a station I'd heard only once
before from a US site (Harwich, MA ... a much better location than home
for Euro's). Finland had a great signal for over an hour (before 0630
to after 0730). Kaliningrad-1386 blasted in with a great "This is the
Voice of Russia World Service" ID at 0600. Of course the usual
Scandinavian big-guns (Norway-1314, Denmark-1062, Sweden-1179) were
booming in at near-local quality. Even at 0800, when I did decide to
"pack it in" for a night's sleep, Norway and Denmark were still
putting in good signals.
Southern Europeans (e.g. Spain) were heard, but the more-northerly
stations had the edge this time around. I'd suspect that, if
conditions stay this good, there will be more US and Canadian
receptions of Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, etc.),
Russians, and other less- frequently-logged northern and eastern
European stations.

I did a bit of listening on the first weekend of the New Year. This is
just a quick report: full loggings will be sent later.
>From Harwich, MA (3 JAN 1998), the longwave and lower-band medium- wave
signals from Europe were very good when monitored between 0345 and
0545 UTC. Instead of usual Netherlands on 675, I noted Arabic music at
0425 UTC. Has Libya moved there from 674 or may this be something
else ? Western Sahara on 711.05 was in with a booming signal (killing
WOR) with speeches and music parallel to Morocco on 612 (which was also
local-like). Some northern Europeans, such as Ireland-567, were coming
through, but Spain and North Africa had the strongest overall signals.
The Trans-Atlantic stations on the upper half of the MW band weren't
too strong: there was worse domestic slop than on the lower
frequencies.
At 1900 UTC / 2 p.m. local (3 JAN), the het from Saudi Arabia (1521)
showed up on the car radio: that's over 2 hours before sunset.
Luckily the weather was fair and mild (by January standards) when I set
up at Windmill Beach in South Yarmouth the following afternoon. I
listened from 2140 UTC (3 JAN) to 0040 (4 JAN). Low band southern
Europe / North Africa MW stations were strong again. Senegal on 765
had a great signal and Burkina Faso - 747 made an appearance. The Latin
Americans were also coming in well. A few of the more unusual signals
noted were a Spanish-language station on 732.25 kHz (weak), another
unID SS on 961.3 and a buzzy / drifty carrier on 624. WSKO - RI
(formerly on 789.8) is now on correct 790.0. Barbados now has the 200
Hz low "channel" to itself and bits of its 789.8 kHz signal were
splittable from WSKO and the others on 790.
High-band northern European signals (such as 1314 and 1422) seem to
have recovered by about 0130 UTC on 4 JAN (as noted on the car radio in
the Plymouth, MA area).
DXers should be aware that stations in the Arab countries may be
operating on extended schedules now that the Ramadan month is in
progress.

The superb cx continue here in Illinois... fell asleep last night
0530 z dec 27 listening to Finland 963 which had mx and talk audible
about 25 % of the time.Also Denmark 1062 and several more Brits.. I
guess more GG on 531 must be Switzerland.. tonite early evening I had
RNE5 there w/ID seemingly //bits of audio from 1107.. also copied some
Croatia on 1125 //the big gun on 1134!.. had Slovakia 1098. At sunset
hrd Saudi 1521 w/AA and big signal from TWR on 1467... many other
carriers in well at near audio levels incl 1188.
Can you tell me how to subscribe to hard core dx..? Managed to
drive truck thru snow to back end of my 65/245 deg mini beverage
tonite(190 meters) and it is a bit better than the loop for all but
extreme northern ta's like 1314.. hope to get to other side of my
property tommorow to use the proper end and also my 45 deg 140 meter

Another excellent morning for TPs, except for some powerline noise.
Lots of Asians all over the dial. Many frequencies with "Pile Ups" of
gobs of stations.
VIETNAM-655 had pretty good signals, but no sign of 1242. Tentative of
BRUNEI-675 with beautiful Malay Pop mx with woman in Malay. Caught
closing News at 1545 UTC. Going to try a taped report.
TAIWAN stations all over the dial. 738 was almost "Local Like" art
times. Unbelieveable. Logged the CBS station on 603. That one I
hadn't heard before. It was u/o the KK. A pretty good copy of the MBC
station(s) on 774 at times after JOUB s/off after 1500.
DZXL - 558 and DZRH - 666 were both in, but not as strong as in earlier
receptions. It wasn't a great Philippine night.
Not many Russians in either. 873 & 756 were about all. Now to see if I
can get a few QSLs out of these.....
This morning (1/8) until about 1200 UTC or so, CX to the North Asians
were pretty good. As I type this just after 1500, CX have dropped off
alot, leaving the JJs poor now. Infact the Aussie is on 792 where there
was a Korean earlier. I had a good signal from The Heilongjiang PBS
station - 621 Khz. Best I have hrd them for a long time. Also a log of
an UNID Asian on 603 Khz mixing with Korea, which may have been
Mongolian. There is a minority language station at Ulanhot, NM province
that does run Mongolian programming at the time. I may try a tent.
taped report to them. CX still continue to hold their own, which is
surprising for January.

MEXICO. Deliberately hunting for MW 3rd harmonics, I encountered one on
4290, Dec 22 at 1257 with Spanish talk, ute on high side reduced by
LSB tuning but still some CW QRM. Mostly talk, with Mexican clues
such as "8 millones de pesos"; no ID heard around hourtop, but a
canned one came unexpectedly at 1317, but could only extract "XE...
[possibly third letter I, and 5 letters]... mil watts de
potencia...1430 kHz...de 6 a 23 horas", then news of earthquake at
17 north. 1338 mentioned "Monitor, 1110 AM y 88.1 de FM" which I
assume was a network program out of Mexico City. By 1400 losing out
to CW marker. Checked the next morning Dec 23 when it started to fade
in around 1245, but weaker and mostly beneath T-storm crashes from
southern Oklahoma (in Dec!). Stayed with it to 1329 fade but no IDs
or other clues heard. The IRCA Mexican Log for 1430 doesn't show any
likely matches yet, so will keep checking (Glenn Hauser, OK)
MEXICO. On 3140, XERF 1570 x 2 heard with music at 1214 and weak
Spanish talk //1570 at 1249 Dec 22. BTW, I've heard 1570 itself as
late as 1700 UT lately as daytime skip continues thanks to lowest
solar angle currently (Glenn Hauser, OK)
U S A. On a whim, I checked 25950 for the Portland, OR pseudo-SW
broadcast station, Dec 22 at 2125, and there it was, on AM with fair
signal, rock music, 2126 ID as "94-7 NRK" and 10 pm call-in line
1-800-LOVE191, but fading out at 2128, and no trace at 2200 recheck.
This fq formerly carried KFXX and KGON, but now it's the third
station under common ownership, KNRK, actually licensed to Camas, WA

U S A. I keep expecting to see a notice of this in one of the MW
bulletins, but have not yet: KOKC, 1490, Guthrie, OK has been off the
air since at least Oct 16 when I first noticed; phoned them a couple
weeks later and it had been disconnected. Formerly had good daytime
signal here, now opens up a graveyarder for daytime winter skip

U S A. Scanning for MW harmonics Dec 22, best signal was on 2800 at
1227 ending gospel request show with "The Other Side of Jordan" and
would return tomorrow at 5 am. Local news and ads during next quarter
hour gave clues such as Highway 171 South, Fort Polk, which are in
western Louisiana; Jasper County, and Hemphill, which are in adjacent
east Texas; "from the 107 news center". Clincher was "35 degrees in
downtown Many" (pronounced Manny with a short A). So this is KWLA
1400 x 2 in Many LA, simulcasting its FM KWLV 107.1, as listed in FM
Atlas and M-Street Directory. At times there was a subaudible
heterodyne of 1 to 2 Hz from another much weaker harmonic on 2800.
Note to DXers: PLEASE do NOT try to QSL MW harmonics or contact the
stations; that could be extremely counterproductive, leading to
elimination of the harmonic (Glenn Hauser, OK)

I picked up a Spanish-language station on AM 1450, which must be from
the U.S. or Mexico. It gave only the slogan "La Rancherita", which I
haven't found on any list. Can anyone help?
Based on conditions at the time (Nov. 25th 0735 UTC) and antenna
direction, U.S. East Coast is excluded, likely from the West or Midwest
- or Mexico. Heard using an NRD-535 with a 1000-meter-long beverage
antenna in Northern Finland. Played lots of Mexican music. I already
phoned KGRE Greeley CO, but the slogan is not theirs. Any help on this
UNID is highly appreciated!

I was catching up on my NRC AM Log revisions tonight. I ran across
an interesting little X-band tidbit in DXN. They were talking about
KQXI 1550 Arvada CO: "CP for 10000/4750 U4 from new site has expired
and it was assumed that KQXI's grant for an X-band station on 1690
would be the reason this CP was allowed to run out. Stations moving to
the X-band are supposed to turn off their other operation within five
years. Now KQXI has asked for replacement of this CP. Whether a station
can develop then sell off a new X-band station and keep their present
license and continue to operate that station past five years, or if a
standard-band station can be sold and continue to operateand avoid the
mandatory five-year rule, has yet to be tested. Very interesting."

This whole X-band thing, while it may yet be a real boon to DXers,
has sure been a fiasco from the start. The delays, appeals, etc., were
one thing, but here are a couple of other points. First, a station
owner in Elizabeth NJ with friends in Congress gets a jump on everyone
else, moves his station to the X-band, then sells his new station for
several million dollars. Second, a station in Miami (they must have
also had friends in high places) builds a station before it has a CP,
patiently waits for the bureaucracy to complete the process, then is
positioned to be the first fully-licensed X-band station on the air
(and the first X-bander to be jammed by Fidel).
We also see that X-band stations are being granted call letters
different from their parent stations, and that those on the air are
offering separate programming from their parent stations. I thought
that stations that were moving to the X-band were granted extended use
of two frequencies until their listeners had time to adjust their
listening habits and/or buy new radios, not to act like they were two
separate stations.
So, it is no wonder that Jerry Starr is wondering out loud if
owners are going to find a way to keep both services going. The move to
the X-band, which was intended to relieve crowding, may yet end up
doing the opposite of what was intended. Go figure!
I count only 33 stations that have been granted X-band CP's or ar
are presently on the air. No big rush to the band. The FCC has been far
more effective (although less systematic) in relieving overcrowding by
cancelling licenses of silent stations. Unfortunately, these stations
are probably either mom-and-pop types that have been really struggling
or stations discarded by big corporations after buyouts. The losers
aren't the owners, but the communities they serve.

KCCN AM, Honolulu"s beloved Hawaiian Music radio station for thiry one
years will be phasing out the format in favor of "News Talk" in an
effort to compete with the other yakkity yak stations in Hawaii.
The change will probably start taking effect this coming February and
will eliminate the "Traditional" and "Territorial" style of music which
has been so popular for years! According to the Program Director as
stated on the KGMB TV news at 5:PM January 7, 1998, they want to get
involved in "local Issues' such as "Hawaiian Sovereignty!"
First time I know of when a radio station has announced its desire to
commit suicide ahead of time!
Another voice of tradition has drowned in the wave of "New Radio" and
the battle for ratings and advertising dollars regardless of any
service they might have been giving to an admittidly "niche" audience.
