Re: [HCDX]: Un-FAIR DXing
This is an interesting thread, if only because people are talking a bit
about the methods they use, which I'd like to see more of somewhere (I
wouldn't mind seeing it on this list, but I guess this list is primarily for
reporting rare stations heard, right?)
I think one of the joys of this hobby is the ingenuity people have to get
around some natural limitations. Is it unfair for me to listen to tropical
band DX from south Asia during my local mornings when there's a darkness
path? Maybe REAL DX only happens off normal propagation paths+ACE- The ethics
being discussed in this thread is not about the ethics of listening, it's
the ethics of lying about what you listened to from where. It IS only a
hobby, but ethics are ethics, and some people may make the awards/contest
stakes higher than is rational. Once you discuss ethics, there's the issue
of how you hold people to ethics. I was (slightly) disappointed several
years ago when I sent an application for several awards from my DX club, and
was never asked for any proof of the QSLs I was claiming. I was concerned
about several QSLs that reported no data, and asked the awards chair if
those should be excluded -- and was told to report them anyway.
Maybe someday computers will be so advanced, they'll do all the DX-ing tasks
for us, including the listening (just kidding+ACE-)

Yes, it is true. I remember the time when I started with DXing in the mid
70's I read in a magazine - source unknown - about DXing while you sleep.
If you have a wheel-to-wheel stereo recording machine you need two things:
a time-signal station and the radiostation you want to observe. Put the
TS on one channel of your recording machine and the radiostation on
the other channel. Oh ... I forgot, you also need a clock to switch on this
equipment just on time.
After your morning breakfast you can listen to the reception this machine
made. But you have to write your reports by yourself.
It is my opinion: this method is not REAL DXing. REAL DXing that means
you sit in front of your receiver with headphones, lots of papers - may be
observations from friends or only for your details - and a big pot of coffee
or tea, as you please. Also with some friends about you. And ... of course a
tape/cassette recorder. That is right for a better identification later on.
Or
for
more programme details. Not only especially for DX-Camps. But you sit in
front of your equipment more or less al+AO0-ve 8-)))
If you order the machines to do your hobby ... that is un-FAIR DXing
and you are an un-FAIR DXer.
With the best wishes to all FAIR DXer I remain
