I use two Panasonic portables, a 1978 RF-2200 - purchased 22 years ago this
month and still going strong! and a RFB-45. I bought the RFB-45 in 1993,
after the Sony ICF-7600D that I got in 1986 crapped out and died, and was
told that the cost of repairs would be as much as a new radio.

I used to have a longwire, but no longer use it. I use only the built-in
ferrite sticks and whip antennas. The RF-2200's "GYRO antenna" is the usual
ferrite stick, but is separate from the main body of the radio. Though
dating from the Carter Administration, and a pain in the butt to tune
accurately because of the lack of digital readout, the RF-2200 is still one
of the best receivers for MW DXing. But it's too hefty for travel (the
RF-2200 is only a "portable" when compared to, say, a Collins R-390 :) so I
don't leave home without the RFB-45. It's done yeoman service while I was
in India and on several yoga retreats, mainly to the Kripalu Center
http://www.kripalu.org over the years.
