Hang on a sec. We're missing a point here.

Regarding #1: If a publication uses someone's log in an uncompensated fashion
it does *not* belong to the publisher and is therefore not copyrightable by
that publisher. All rights belong to the original logger and the copyright is
implied by mentioning the source. Also, the *compilation as a whole* is
copyrightable by the publisher as a piece of edited work. Simply put: If you
use a log you should cite the original source.  However, you don't have to
cite a publication that leveraged it *unless* you are also using any
additional editing done by the publication.

Regarding #2: Didn't think that was part of the original issue, but I do agree
that the information should be a two-way street.
